A 50s computer would have been largely glass vacuum tubes and dropping it would cause quite a lot of problems. And a modern computer would be fine in an earthquake if it didn't fall off something or have something heavy fall on it.

How much tipping these days is cash vs card? I would imagine that cash tips are underreported on tax forms.

Purchase was national, rollout per-country (though they did all do it pretty much the same way, with broadly similar results)

Anyone can test, true, but you need the machine in front of you to do it. There's definitely value in knowing before you buy that the manufacturer has made sure that their hardware works with your favourite distro -- and that they'

I was checking out Linux laptops last night and came across Star Labs ( https://starlabs.systems/ ) who look pretty interesting. They're based in the UK and seem to be focusing on thoroughly testing their machines on as

IIRC toxoplasmosis affects the brains of rodents making them less afraid of cats, which means that they're more likely to be killed and eaten by those cats, which spreads the infection to the cats. I think there have been claims that p

It's possible to jog at that speed if you try hard - I've been doing some low heart rate training recently and can get down to 11m/km while still jogging, and I'm pretty tall so the biomechanics are weird. It does look r

That's interesting! From my (admittedly very weak) understanding of Cyrillic, I'd expect Беларусь to be pronounced with a "y" sound as part of the "e", similarly to the vowel at the start of Ельцин (Yeltsin). P

In the UK here. You're pretty much right; the goal as stated was to get a first dose into all of the clinically vulnerable people (long term illness, diabetic, severely asthmatic, etc) and those over 50 before moving on to second doses

Python almost managed to blow itself up over the move to 3, though, in a very similar manner to the 5-6 transition for Perl. It was only through a lot of hard work that disaster was averted.

Interesting article. I have occasional (every few years) periods of anxiety. Last time around I went through a course of CBT, some of which I found moderately helpful - don't try to suppress feelings of fear, just acknowledge it and mo

The black death originated in central or east Asia but I don't think there's any indication that it was in China. Given the proximity, China might have been one of the first nations to be affected with the ability to document it,

Agreed. I was planning to set up a pi as a media server sharing out a synced Dropbox folder, but the long term reliability of the storage made that impossible. Sure, you can attach USB storage (and that should be pretty fast with the Pi4)

Using that in the article would have made things much less confusing. But journalists tend to avoid titles - perhaps especially when the person in question has apparently done something bad.

The problem is that it's a staging kernel, not a full release. I've not been able to get it to boot on m3.large AWS instances, though it seems to work on xlarge.

If you think the life experiences of gay/trans people in 1930s Europe aren't remotely related to development then you might want to read a little bit about the life of Alan Turing. While it's a little over-dramatised, the re
