Python almost managed to blow itself up over the move to 3, though, in a very similar manner to the 5-6 transition for Perl. It was only through a lot of hard work that disaster was averted.
- ddtaylor 6y agoThe transition was super painful and took nearly a decade. Some Linux distros defaulted to 2, some 3, some cleanly mapped to python2 and python3 and some just left "python" running some arbitrary default. It was a serious mess. The worst part is that to an end user the differences were so minor. I'm sure under the hood and as a whole there are big differences between 2 and 3, but for most of us it was really minor stuff like "print x" vs "print(x)"
