I don't see how Uber's relationship with the passenger has any bearing on a driver's relationship with Uber. If instead, my analogy were that I was a general contractor who built water slides and a water park put out a bid on

Seems like it maps to me. Google and Apple are hiring me to do work, then they are selling the output of that work to someone else (indirectly, in this case, but I don't see how that matters.)

> They are employees in that they cannot negotiate rates. Hmm... How is an Uber driver different from a plumber here? Let's say Google needs some pipes fixed at one of its offices and they tell me how much they'll pay, refusing

Join your school's ACM Programming Contest or ICPC team. It will prepare you well for whiteboard coding interviews. Also try to do at least two internships; they'll teach you a lot about what professional work is really like and o

I would be happy if the New York Times was banned from this site. An awful lot of low quality and off topic content from there seems to constantly make it to the front page here.

I graduated from college and entered the industry just post-bust (early 2002.) I went to work for a company that had, 6 months prior, laid everyone off and decided to pivot with the remaining VC cash. I think it took them 3 or 4 months to f

It's been a while since I looked at Elixir but the different syntax for invoking named functions vs lambdas really left a bad taste in my mouth... Also I remember trying to do something with the pipe operator that I couldn't get w

I think the key with shallow work you can't avoid is to schedule your day thoroughly. Batch the shallow work together into a single 30 minute to 1 hour block, as much as possible.

I'm pretty sure the "hatred" towards vegans and vegetarians isn't actually hatred, but defensiveness. I think most meat-eaters wouldn't care about veganism and vegetarianism at all if there weren't so many vega

The two things I really appreciated about Whole Foods were the faster checkouts and the fact that they didn't constantly bug you about a club card. I don't really go out of my way to shop there any more...
