At this level of abstraction and energy scale it's modelled as a mathematical field, but things get more tricky "underneath" just as you suggest.

It's an infinite sum of variations of the same photon, not an infinite amount of photons. When it hits the detector (or, really, when the researcher eventually gets entangled with the experiment) it is detected as a single interactio

A standard particle is not a point in 4D, it's a track, if it's locally static (compared to you for example) it's still churning happily along the t-dimension. In GR, the 4D spacetime is curved, so when you burn along the t-d

3.5Å cryo-EM structures have existed for some time. The important thing coming down under 2Å or so, is that it drastically improves the quality of the molecular dynamics simulations you build of these structures.

Thanks, yeah think I've read about that version before. But "the magnetic field spins the electron around once", doesn't this feel a bit weak? You could conceivably just define "spin around once" as the B-field

Apart from in a mathematical sense, how do you actually rotate a spin 1/2 particle say 360 degrees? Does this only apply in derived theorems like the spin-statistics swap of identical particles or is there an actual physical process wh

Well, that is true for all components at digikey. You don't mass-produce stuff with components bought from DK (or avnet either, for that matter, depending on where you do your production)

Yes it's extremely difficult not to leak (potential) information. This is called decoherence in these situations. It doesn't matter if you don't become conscious of the measurement result as long as some atoms in your body ge

You know a cool thing you can do to help fixed point interop between operations in a complex system where you absolutely don't want to accidentally overflow anywhere? You can tack on some bits to the number to control an overall scale

When you fund a huge project using state money, not just physics projects but anything, it's as much about all the side-effects. A 10 year $10B project.. I mean, those $10B will not go into a bank account, they will be used to funnel w

I'm not sure just increasing funding to thep would generate new ideas, why would they not just funnel it into the same "safe" programmes as they have done the last 25 years? There are some small "fringe science" pro

"Extremely contrived" is a little bit misleading since they did in fact run random algorithms from a general set of algorithms. So it's rather the opposite of contrived.. but I understand what you mean :)

Also people regularly just ignore the lane markings (and break all the other rules too...). You have to consider all those cases as well.

Yes, this is already being done (since long) by many different research groups and industrial companies with various levels of ambition (it's normally not needed nor feasible to design everything completely from scratch though). If you

Hmm, ok seems like you could end up with something practical! Unfortunately any misstep will give you a $100/month extra bill. It was stuff like this I was hoping would be solved already without extra hacks :)

But for a repository with millions of files, the GET lists required would be a substantial cost (and something that has to be done every day). It would perhaps be useful with a mode where a repo of file hashes could be kept in parallell at

I've been looking for something like this for years. Never found it during my googling. My google-fu is weak :( BTW how does the sync work? Does for example AWS expose a (free or supercheap) way of getting the SHA1 of a file on S3?

Thanks for the insights! One thing though, protein folding is just one tiny bit of molecular dynamics research (and not really crucial at that often, due to the rise of high res cryo EM and good xray crystallography), so I would hope there

Same thing with old 90's linux and most code from that time. I guess the key thing is not the OS or languages but the reliance on external things, a dockerized microservice on a modern cloud is basically on the other end of that spectr
