All of those examples pose threats, but none of them is guaranteed to overtake the corresponding Microsoft product. Microsoft isn't sitting still, it's rapidly adding features to each of its products (e.g. Office 365 and the Office web app

Apple and Google may have surpassed them, but Microsoft's market cap has been pretty stable since 2002 or so. They are no longer a rapidly growing company, but they haven't been in decline.

Sure, Windows is in a precarious position. However, that's why it's to Microsoft's credit that they have diversified their portfolio of applications and services so heavily. I can imagine a future where Microsoft isn't prominently on cons

People have been predicting Microsoft's decline for years, but they just posted record revenues last quarter. They have a much more diverse set of profitable businesses than Apple, Amazon, or Google do - Office, Windows, SQL Server, Xbox,

I don't think it's just that. I don't have any fear that any individual will film me, since this probably happens frequently anyway (how many strangers have me in the background of their pictures somewhere?). Nonetheless, the idea that the

I suspect different teams are involved with scanning for malware URLs in Skype and implementing core OS protections, so the tradeoff you imply is illusory. Besides, Microsoft already puts a lot of effort into the security of Windows, with

Why? It's already an ISO/ECMA standard, and there's an existing high quality open source implementation in Mono. Microsoft has open sourced several of their more recent frameworks and languages, including ASP.NET MVC, F#, and TypeScript,

You don't need a monopoly, just market power. And how the market is defined can be an interesting issue on its own, so I imagine it would be conceivable that YouTube _would_ be found to have a monopoly on "community contributed videos", or

What is Mono missing for your needs? Between Xamarin Studio and the free editions of Visual Studio, you can now use F# to target iOS, Andriod, Windows Phone, Linux, Mac, and Windows. To me, this is pretty compelling.

I think that the addition of WinRT has made a lot of things much more complex in the short run, but I'm willing to wait and see - I think that the long term vision of a portable subset that runs everywhere is pretty attractive. This is def

I don't think commercial vs. open source really affects that much - regardless of open-source-ness, different projects are run in different ways. Just to give two examples, surely Office's switch to the Ribbon (and putting Office Apps onli

I'll add an obligatory plug for F# if you're looking for a fully supported .NET language REPL (as opposed to a side project like scriptcs, not that there's anything wrong with it). As a bonus, F# is now fully supported by Xamarin Studio if

Your broader point is a good one, but my understanding (though IANAL) is that while copyright does protect the expression of an idea rather than the idea itself, exactly where to draw the line is a bit of a fuzzy area (see "substantial simi

What would it mean for Microsoft to "pull an Apple", given that they just reported record revenue in their last quarter? I mean, their relevance in some consumer markets is waning, and that must be a bit disquieting, but it's not like they

I think F# has aesthetics similar to Python, despite being a statically typed language in the ML family. It's open sourced, with great IDE support on Windows (via Visual Studio, including a free option) and good IDE support on other platfo
