Perhaps running their existing applications is a consideration? Or retraining costs? There are plenty of reasons that the total cost of ownership might be lower with Windows.

They have no obligation to do so. But then why not be honest about refusing service to users of a competing platform, rather than claiming that it's about the technical capabilities of the browser? This is something that was working on WP

Of course it's anti-competitive! They took something that was working on a competitor's phone platform and intentionally caused it to stop working. It's probably not illegal , but if it's designed to harm a competitor it is by definition

Sure, there are definitely benefits to tracking, and if TV advertisers could do it I'm sure they would. I just wanted to address the contention that DNT implied that ads would be blocked. And I wonder how much benefit tracking cookies rea

DNT doesn't block ads, it prevents tracking (ideally). Other ad-supported businesses (e.g. most TV in the US) seem to get by fine without needing tracking cookies.

It's not a flaw. Arguably it's worse than having a generic mechanism, but it's certainly not worse than having to use explicit callbacks, as in essentially all other popular languages (and previous versions of C#).

There are several other limitations. For instance, method signatures can't be inferred. In F#, you can write member this.AddOne(i) = i + 1 and AddOne will be inferred to have the signature (int -> int). There are plenty of ot

Can you expand on what exactly you mean by LINQ? Do you mean the .NET library support (extension methods on IEnumerable/IQueryable)? Do you mean the language features added to C# (anonymous types, expression trees, nicer lambdas, query sy

The evidence in that article seems quite weak to me. It reads like an opinion piece - it nicely fits some statistics into a narrative, but it hardly seems like a conclusive demonstration that "medical patents have caused regressions in inn

This seems like a silly way to analyze things. If, as you seem to assume, the US is currently at the forefront of innovation, then why shouldn't we attribute the status quo to the US's strong IP regime by the same logic?

Indeed. On a pedantic side note, the correct phrase is perhaps surprisingly "just deserts", not "just desserts" (it has to do with things that are deserved, not with after dinner treats).

What are the consequences of your preferred approach for legacy code? While there are certainly disadvantages of duplicating APIs in terms of cruft, I think that many customers appreciate that old code continues to run (and compile) agains

Patents undoubtedly hinder the development of certain technologies. They almost surely incentivize the development of other technologies (e.g. drugs, chemical formulations). It is far from clear to me that the complete abolishment of pate

Does MSFT's approach make it harder to write rootkits? Doesn't that have value to their users? Is there a plausible alternative that protects their users to the same degree? If not, then even if it makes it harder for users to install Li
