I don't really see them as competing with each other that directly... The Pro has more powerful hardware (and compatibility with legacy x86 applications), but is way pricier, heavier, and with less battery life. It seems pretty clearly ai

I don't believe that's accurate (at least, as I would interpret "concrete harm to customers"). It may be enough in the US for the predator to intend to reduce competition and to have a reasonable chance of success (and of maintaining highe

There was an upgrade discount when Win 7 came out, too, down to $50 [1]. Additionally, as others have pointed out, it's unclear how many of the 40M licenses are upgrades vs. OEM licenses. [1] see http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-7

It would be possible to do this, but as you note it would potentially be annoying in practice. "tailcall" is a reserved (but unused) word in F#, so the compiler could be extended to issue an error if the user prefixed a non-tail call with

People interested in how tail call elimination is performed by the compilers of other languages may be interested in a post I wrote on the F# team blog some time ago: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/fsharpteam/archive/2011/07/08/tail-c... .

Of course, some languages only support elimination of tail calls when they're recursive. I believe that Scala suffers from this (since the JVM doesn't support tail call elimination).

A drop in sales doesn't imply a drop in usage, though. Perhaps PCs are merely lasting longer before needing to be replaced?

This seems overly pessimistic. I'm sure it'd take a lot of work, but consider results like Gonthier's proof of the Odd Order Theorem (see http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/news/features/gonthierpr... ), which formalized a book-length pr

Take a look at the images in this article by Ed Bott: http://www.zdnet.com/how-outraged-should-you-be-about-ads-in... (also linked from this story). You think maybe it was a mere oversight that the ads all appear where they are completel

I really think this issue is overblown. Someone could literally use the Weather app for years without realizing there's an ad in it, for instance, because you have to scroll way over to the right to see it (past the daily forecast, the w

The Xbox music store serves as both a music player as well as a music store. I don't consider showing content from the store as advertising. Is iTunes also "a big advert"?

I hope this isn't really your view of MSR; if it is, you might consider whether your opinions of Microsoft are coloring your perception. How is all of the academic work done on Haskell, for example, motivated by an impulse to exclude other

What do you mean by "running out of ways to make more money"? Didn't MSFT post their highest revenue ever this year? Also, even for Apple the app store doesn't seem to be a big profit center. I really think that consumer preference is dri

Indeed. I find that these studies really assess learnability more than usability . Of course, learnability is one aspect of usability, but I'm more interested in how users fare after spending some time with it. Personally, I've found

Under this theory, you believe that Ballmer can unilaterally have Sinofsky removed without board approval? Or the board just unthinkingly goes along with him, even though it removes a high-profile leader in the organization?
