For women reading this post and thinking "I should negotiate more," please make sure you've also read the research on how salary negotiation works differently for women. There was a New Yorker article on the phenomenon last y

I taught Ian's Fast Shoelace Knot to my 91-year-old grandmother a while back, when I first ran into this site. She liked it well enough that she still ties her shoes that way. It's a nifty knot.

I'll guess theme() was inspired by s-expressions, whether consciously or not. The theme() function dates from when Dries was a CS student writing a lot of the code himself. (It's also worth noting that theme() hasn't worked t

I do not "trial and error" my way to correct answers, but I complain bitterly about whiteboard interviews. It's the wrong medium. I wouldn't mind at all being asked to use a pack of cards as a prop to talk through a sort

She certainly has the free-speech right to write whatever she wants to. It's just not the way most families treat each other - certainly my brother wouldn't write this about me, and vice versa - so it's uncomfortable to read.

This is idlewords's concept of investor storytime[0]. The only difference is that here, the author thinks it's a good thing. [0] http://idlewords.com/talks/internet_with_a_human_face.htm#ad...

No. I'm not convinced unusually high IQ leads to greater happiness, and what I care about for my children is happiness. In a literal sense, they're probably already too smart for their own good.

Plenty of two-year-olds do still breastfeed, actually. The story doesn't mention if Adam was breastfeeding but it's quite possible. Toddlers that age don't need breast milk nutritionally (at least in developed countries) but

It sounds like you were trying to correct for an assumed subconscious bias of "deep down, we really want to hire men." In my experience, though, decent people like you don't have that bias. What they do have is a subconscious

This very common assumption -- which I used to hold -- has it exactly backwards. Let's assume tall people and short people are equally good at cracking eggs. Mathematically, if 90% of your egg-crackers are short, you've already

Reddit would do well to hire someone with experience in the association management field. Those folks specialize in managing fractious communities such that the volunteers not only stick around, they're happy to pay for the privilege.
