Futurama gave me the kind of unfortunate habit of starting with the German equivalent of "Good news, everyone..." when telling users about something bad. People who did not know Futurama found it puzzling, but it was just so funny

I had that book as a child. Well, not this book, obviously, but I had one with those stories and those exact pictures in it. I did not like them very much, though, because the moral of the stories is inevitably that if you don't conf

What goes around, comes around - I am writing this comment on a laptop running Tumbleweed, with another one running Leap 15.2 sitting next to me. Coming back to Suse was a bit like coming home. (-:

Back in the day, they also had SaX (SuSE advanced X-configurator or something like that), a GUI tool to configure XFree86. That was something I sorely missed when I started using other Linux distros and *BSD - editing the config file by han

I vaguely remember reading about an esoteric programming language that was based on Klingon. IIRC, it was a functional language. (-: But I do not speak or read or write Klingon, so I never looked at it, and I do not remember the name, eithe

As a German, I find this highly disturbing, given my country's history. Maybe I am just a bit naive (probably), but I had not expected to read about something like this happening in a ____ing democracy that claims some regard for hum

Before I got into Linux, I spent about half a year customizing the crap out of my Win98 PC using LiteStep. I must have tried about half a dozen alternative desktop shells for Windows back then. Fun times... Thanks for reminding me!

I have had a similar experience, I got a Mac in 2013, switched back to Linux in 2017. There is one thing I miss - the emacs-keybindings in the system text input widget, that one was awesome. But otherwise, I feel much more at home on Linux

Everything can search file content, but you have to ask for it, and of course one looses the great performance that is Everything's main selling point. I forgot the syntax, because I never used it for that reason, but the option is the

How does it handle de-serializing to structs with interface members? With encoding/json and ffjson, I had to write some code to handle that myself and add a type-tag member to my struct, which wasn't a deal-breaker, but if I could

IIUC, minimum code size was not the top priority of the creator of ripgrep. And Rust's claim to fame is not that it allows you to get the job done with less code. Its claim is that it allows you to get the job done, but with far fewer

Serious and funny - to me - are not mutually exclusive. The idea of wombats stacking their poop is very funny, but if I was a biologist, that would make me want to investigate the matter even more. During my Zivildienst ( https:/

No, they let them drown, they purposefully buy drones and aircraft instead of ships so they do not have to rescue them. It may not be quite the same, but it hardly measures up to the moral standards the EU likes to claim to stand for.

I love it! Coincidentally, after I managed to get my sister to name her daughter Ada after the programming language, I will eventually have to make an effort to get her acquainted with programming. This book will make a good starting point.
