Long story short, I became aware of the position through networking in the tech/startup community in Ann Arbor, and eventually got introduced to an ML prof who knows the profs who are actually running the lab. I applied to the position

Some on this thread have recommended Norvig's PAIP, but that's kind of an old school AI book in that it focuses on heuristic search and logic (implementing prolog in lisp at one point, very impressive stuff actually); but is lacki

Make ability to learn on the job a high priority. Save your money and take time off. I wrote about my experience taking time off for a 'learning sabbatical' here: http://karlrosaen.com/learning-sabbatical/ an

I like the concept and the framing of the demo is really cool, but the actual music generated in response to me doing basic things like playing a blues riff or a pentatonic scale was usually just a repeat of some fragment of what I was play

Employers need to take folks like this into consideration when setting their workplace policies, such as to what degree to allow flexible hours. There are always trade offs. Thinking specifically about workplace hours, having at least some

Isn't this article conflating feed forward applications of trained conv nets with the training of conv nets? The latter is what is so expensive, yet it seems like the demo of object recognition is the former, and not a breakthrough to

I think it's more accurate to say that good developers need to have some level of systems expertise which probably means OS & networking fundamentals + practical Linux experience. This is because you need to have some understanding

I would definitely distinguish between html / css / javascript and server side application code, be it in ruby or python, I just didn't think working on the server side application logic completed the "full stack".
