Like CGI, this is another case of identifying when it’s used badly but not noticing when it’s used well. Criterion, for example, uses every single one of these AI techniques to do their restorations. They just do it well. >“You see this

I used to feel this way, but then I slowly realized that Curtis tends to appear to have more of a thesis than he ever actually does. The movies are less a traditional essay, and more a social history of ideas and their consequences. What th

Adam Curtis is honestly one of the greatest documentarians of our time. I first watched Hypernormalization, but then binged everything he ever made a few months ago. More Adam Curtis recs: the DDT episode and the Kwame Nkrumah episode of Pa

From what I’ve read and heard, this was actually a major success for George Romero. Night of the Living Dead had made its money back (and more) by the time anyone noticed it was public domain. Once people realized, NotLD got a level of pub

I’ll take it one step further: As long as humans are capable of producing more than they consume at some point in the future, then it’s logical to keep them around if your goal is production.

My time would be better spent working on a project instead of explaining to my father’s girlfriend’s son how to solve whatever problem he’s having with the software. The whole point is that it’s not important and I don’t want to spend my ti

Because spending time to fix and Jerry-rig a product means you’re not spending time doing something else. You’re operating on a slower time scale and you’re spending your time on projects that aren’t of primary importance.

And if you’re willing to compromise your functionality for anything, it just means that you are okay with being incompetent as long as you can justify it with some strict moral ideology. That’s equally sad.

It shoulda been opt in but I love this feature tbh. I’ve been waiting for some kind of social features with plex. It would make my life much easier if I could write reviews for movies so my friends could see what I think rather than constan

Look, some open source projects are great and some aren’t managed so well. It’s not heresy to pick and choose.

Capitalism doesn’t exclude the government from owning capital. Communism does exclude the private ownership of capital.

Sounds like a capitalist dictatorship to me… People need to stop defining stuff by whether or not it works the way you want it to work. We still call a capitalist system “capitalist” if it’s broken for the same reason we still call a box a

That’s an issue with data: If your initial conditions are wrong (Aka your data collection has any error or isn’t thorough enough) then you get a completely different result.

But AI/ML models require good data and the issue with chaotic systems like weather is that we don’t have good enough data.

Yes. Very accurate as long as you don’t need to predict the unpredictable. So it’s useless. Edit: I do see a benefit to the idea if you compare it to the Chaos Theorists “gaining intuition” about systems.

I feel like capitalism has gotta be the most misunderstood word in the English language. Is it a financial system where you can own capital? Then it’s capitalism.

I always felt like we could mathematically define stories but I wasn’t sure how until I learned about Chaos Theory. There are some stories that seem to be very simple geometric, discrete shapes, but I think if you look at any story you’ll f

I was wrong about the era, apparently the height of the comic book scare was the late 1950s, but it continued to the end of the century as far as I remember. It's all based on this book Seduction of the Innocent: https://www
