If you are using a Pinephone and are in the USA, chances are you are already using (some of) them: I wrote mmsd-tng, the backend to giving MMS on the Pinephone: https://gitlab.com/kop316/mmsd/ vvmd/vvmplayer,

I'm not disagreeing, I think it is awesome! I built several apps that are aimed for Mobile linux, and the only reason I build them specifically on the Pinephone is because I need to test it with the modem.

Here is one person's experience with it over the past two years: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31806639 I have been using a Librem5 for the past six months full time, here is my comment on usage from ~week ago:

Looking through this, I don't see anything that is Pinephone specific. Building Pinephone apps is just like building for a Linux distro with a small screen and a modem. So I am curious, what about the process was Pinephone specific?

Unfortunately shipping li-ion batteries is not easy as well. IIRC, this is actually one explicit reason Pine64 is making an EU store, so it is easier to ship things like li-ion batteries to folks.

From what I understand, one can't even change the title of the chat if it is SMS/MMS versus iMessage. That is a client side issue that Apple chooses not to allow, so I would argue, yes it is that petty. I know it is a client side

Matrix has a managed bridge to WhatsApp: https://element.io/blog/ems-launches-fully-managed-matrix-br... And there are a bunch of Matrix clients for Mobile Linux (I use Nheko, but Fluffychat is quite good as well)

Skimming through, I am surprised they don't call out this. I know for a Pixel 3a, you cannot even boot AOSP without compiling in the driver binaries: https://source.android.com/setup/build/downloading#download

I use it for Calls, SMS/MMS, Email, Calendar, tasks/TODOs, various chat applications, 2FA, password manager, and internet. So it fills the functions I expect in a smartphone. I think it has some apps for social media, but I only h

This is some good background info: https://drewdevault.com/2022/01/18/Pine64s-weird-priorities.... TL;DR: Pine64 creates the hardware, but pretty much depends on the community to get software support. As a re

I have personally used Mobian and PostmarketOS as a daily driver. The "Phone" aspect works pretty well (Calls, SMS/MMS, voicemail, VoLTE, no Wifi Calling). The base model Pinephone works fine for very basic tasks, but is very

ok, sure they could? I don't get your point. The entry point to buy a mechanical watch isn't $500k USD. I have a 1860s mechanical pocket watch that I purchased for $60.

I would assume one could become skilled at mushroom foraging much, much faster and with much, much less tooling than creating a watch movement.

If you are curious on actually making a watch movement, I recommend looking at George Daniel's book "Watchmaking". It is a very well put together book, but is also very technical.

The git issue is hard to follow. They reference having GPL'ed license code, but the author claims there is only LGPL code in it. The issue poster then says at one point GPLed code was used....but then doesn't show commits where it
