If the goal is saving money in your 20s, having a 1BR is kind of absurd. You can live in a multi-bedroom apartment/house in SF for much less than that.

What's better? Hashcash is interesting, but it's probably not applicable to every scenario and it hasn't seen much adoption. There might even be a bit of a stigma now around proof-of-work algorithms because of cryptocurrency

The Ethereum white paper was published in 2013. The events surrounding TheDAO, which the annotations mention, occurred in 2016. I'm not sure where the 2015 in the HN title is coming from.
