I was able to determine that someone with the exact same bag had taken mine from baggage claim and retrieve it from them before they left the airport with it. We both had much better vacations as a result. I’m going to keep mine in my lugga

It always amuses me when the API link in the footer floats up as a submission every few years.

I think Apple is transparent about Always on VPN (blocking traffic except over the tunnel) requiring provisioning using MDM tools. Apple Configurator is free and allows anyone to set this up. Any other VPN is just best effort. https:/

I’ll wait to see the details but modern messaging apps are super complex and have tons of features. The odds of a third party implementing them all (and correctly) is low. Instead it’ll be like how iMessage “interoperates” with SMS, where n

That’s just the API. I no longer work on HN, but as of 2016 it was still flat files (s-exprs) on a ZFS dataset.

Just pick a good password and don’t reuse it elsewhere. HN is super aggressive about rate limiting attempts, so brute force isn’t really a risk.

My big problem with HTTP basic auth in 2022 (squints at Netgear router) is that in Edge/Chrome 1Password can’t auto complete it. It gets really annoying really quickly.

If you refuse to install the desktop client, and just take calls in the browser, then you can close the tab when the meeting ends.

Comment item ids are sequential (unless that’s changed since I last looked). You can perform relative ordering operations using them just like you could dates.

It’s been interesting to see the ecosystem around GraphQL experience the same problems and finally reach parity with oData.

Isn’t the easiest solution here for companies to register their own domain? Why be company.service.tld and not just company.tld? What are these businesses doing for email?

Ubiquiti has really fallen far. The 5.x series of controller with the AP AC (S)HD was great, but everything since has been hot garbage. The 6.x series of controllers is still basically a public beta and riddled with bugs. The newer MediaTek

If you control your own email routing, by using your own mail server, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, etc, you can choose whatever convention you want. How would you know to strip everything after my first name?

If you use a product from the marketplace the vendor of the product gets your contact information. This doesn't seem controversial. Was contacting the user a bad call by Ubuntu? Maybe, but I bet they track this kind of thing.

If HN ends up moving to the CS runtime I'd love to hear a high level summary of what work it required and how the new runtime performs.
