KPIs related to patents, academic papers, contributions to various projects and yes technologies for products. The Irish site was always aware of its isolation from the mothership and usually went above and beyond.

I’d already left a couple of years. Most Bell Labs stuff is closer to research than development anyway.

It was kept remarkably quiet. That site in particular received a lot of support from the IDA over the years so I can't imagine they were too happy about it. BLI was told year on year that it was a top performing site. Then a few months

That’s nice and all but I’m still salty about how Nokia shuttered Bell Labs Ireland last year. So many close friends lost their jobs.

I would think the type of customer that used Backblaze is orthogonal to a typical Facebook user and is actively hostile to Facebook’s practises. By even considering using their spyware in any shape or form is an egregious breach of trust an

170,000 lines of Matlab code for a project is not a good sign. Unless they’re also including the source of various Matlab toolboxes which are already tested by the Mathworks. It’s such a high-level language it’s hard to imagine what the hel

While Image Capture is fine the transfer speeds directly from camera are usually poor. Cameras also have CF and now CFexpress. I’ve personally never used an SD card in any of my cameras so USB card readers have been part of my workflow for

I get that, I’ve been shooting for twenty years. The confusion is that the true focal length and the full frame 35mm focal length are used interchangeably. The Canon link doesn’t make it clear other than to suggest it doesn’t really matter

See here https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART14... The confusion comes from the equivalence of the actual focal length of the lens and the 35mm focal length on a full frame sensor.

APS-C is a 1.6 crop. If you put a 24mm lens on a full frame 5D and a 24*1.6=38.4 mm lens on a APS-C 7D you will see the same angle of view. The focal length numbers printed on an EF or an EF-s lens are the same thing for consistency. The cr

I’m pretty sure EF-S focal lengths are 35mm equivalent. They just project a smaller image circle and the rear element is closer to the sensor (so will likely crash the mirror on a full frame camera).

Definitely not doubling up. Some parts of my modules are in Jupyter Notebooks, others inherited PowerPoint that I’m slowly phasing out. I’ve added various examples where I show how a particular equation might be plotted with Matlab and bett

There are already denoising and upscaling neural nets being used to reduce the cost of ray tracing. Lighting in games is also benefiting from sparse voxel based global illumination. GPUs are very efficient at pushing triangles and the tooli

I guess it isn’t popular in these parts, but there is a simplicity to Matlab that’s hard to beat for lowly mechanical engineers. The documentation is also generally excellent. Unfortunately most undergraduates get locked in early with free

The example[1] given at the start of the article is almost like the end of the first order of a Micheal Levi chart[2]. This can be used to describe thin film interference such as a layer of oil on water or a bubble’s colour. Certainly gives

They absolutely are comparable. They are the primary tool many academics use to prepare papers. In engineering I’d say it’s a 50:50 split between those using one or the other. Most students use Word while the exceptional ones have already e
