Just some advice, since you said you're 16. When you get a compliment, I know it's tempting to downplay yourself and seem humble, but a "thank you" is almost more appropriate. Stand by yourself :)

"Government" implies taxes. While we're paying high taxes here in Denmark (about 38-50% income tax depending on your bracket), we don't spend a lot of money on things like health insurance like you do in US.

It's just a reflection on hard it is to survive in USA. For most people, saving up that much money is a total luxury. Plus, having no real safety net from the government when you get sick or lose your job (like we do in EU) just makes

Startups don't do the whole Enterprise Active Directory managed desktop computers thing. These days, users can run whatever they want and everything is done using cloud apps. Onboarding is handing people a shrink-wrapped MacBook and se

I think I often push work without realizing it, but I feel that often I'm done around 16.00 or before lunch. If I know I have to be there anyways, I might as well goof off a little. If no-one cared about the hours but I just had hard d

It's an interesting point. I've met many developers who might be great at what they do, but like to focus on the tech itself (e.g. spending a lot of hours on improving infrastructure or fixing code style), so there's little a

This is HN after all, so no comment thread is complete without a bunch of nitpicking the Web site itself. There's a bunch of grammatical errors on the site (space after exclamation mark, missing words), which prevents me from trusting

I've always been of the opinion that since the world of (web) programming moves so fast, a degree is largely pointless. As long as you have a natural interest in solving problems, learning new technologies and staying up to date, you s

I think it's a big shame they're not making the 12" anymore. It's a perfect computer for lounging around on the sofa or on the go. The new Air actually feels a lot more heavy and cumbersome compared to it.

We use 1Password to manage hundreds of different credentials and secrets, and it works great. LastPass UI is a nightmare last I tried it a couple years ago.

I often use the VCS feature of PHPStorm where I can select a piece of code and then immediately get a nice list of all the commits that changed that code. I can then double click on that code and get a list of other files that were modified

Apple really needs to spend a whole release cycle just fixing existing bugs instead of making new features. Even simple things are faltering, like when logging in, macOS stops registering keypresses in the middle of entering my password. Sw

Totally disagree. When you're at the point where a $50 server won't be enough, you still have a long way to scale, just by adding more hardware. > optimizing for a single server is a waste of resources No, I think you shoul

You don't even need C++. Even with Python, Node or PHP, a basic MySQL and Redis installation on a simple Debian server with a little tweaking, you can serve huge amounts of dynamic traffic with a $50 dedicated server from Hetzner. It&#

It's still new for some of these geeks that were already very experienced with computers around the time when Ribbon was introduced. They've just kept hating it since.

What a weird thing to do of your manager. How did he suggest this? Was he just like "I think you need to take Ritalin"? Did he suggest going to a psychiatrist, or did he want to sell some to you?

Looking at this, it's clear a LOT of thought went into this, and it looks great. Computer geeks that hated this didn't realize how good it was because they were familiar with the previous generations and don't like change. Th

I think these kinds of opinions are really dangerous–we cannot just expect society to go back to the stone age. It's why the average human is blocking climate change out, the changes have to come in the form of e.g. CO2 taxes and broad
