I (author of multiple-database support for django) am extremely uncomfortable with the approach these guys are taking. The proper approach would be to work with Django itself to make things more flexible (when you're subclassing something

It's not a virus, it just unpacks wurkeug, jinja, simplejson, and probably some other stuff. Pretty much it's an epic hack.

I had a friend who I was talking to and he was having trouble with Firefox. I asked him to check what version he was running, he told me 1.9.1. It was a minor miracle I realized that that was his Gecko version, because I was stuttering ar

In a related bit of cleverness I've heard that the JVM doesn't actually put NULL checks in it's generated ASM, instead it installs a SIGSEGV handler that catchs the null pointer exception and does the right thing.

I'd say the problem is less that it's inflammatory and more that it's totally useless. NoSQL as it is used encompasses a whole array of totally different technologies, everything from a bigtable style column store to redis, to memcachedb.

Not a senior (just a lowly sophomore) but I figured I'd chime in: Figuring how I'm going to balance the contracting work I regularly do with another very short term contract this week, and class.

Eh, I use Ubuntu as my primary OS, and I have for a number of years. I'm running 10.04 now, and it's good (obviously, or I wouldn't use it day to day), but I don't think it's any more than incrementally better than 9.10.

What I've heard is that facebook is using Cassandra exclusively for inboxes (and that they're using hbase for a bunch of other stuff).

The argument is that memcached is unnecessary because of the speed of Cassandra, and the fact that .6 includes it's own, built in, row level cache. [cite] http://twitter.com/ericflo/status/9402946197

Dunno, I did one this past summer (concurrently with a GSOC project) and I found it to be a good experience, and a good way to get some real world experience on my resume to pad a ton of open source stuff. That being said there's no way I'

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 right now (upgraded this morning), it's just not that annoying. I'd like it to be fixed (I think the chromium close/redize/minimize buttons look much better), but I think the flurry about this is over statued.

Hopefully this means git will be coming to google code! (one of the big reasons they rejected it in favor of hg was that git was so inefficient over http before)

Nothing. Django provides no HTML for you out of the box (excepting the admin's own HTML, and some of the auto generated HTML for forms).

Stuff like this is why I'm convinced the PyPy guys have the right approach. Write it once in a high level language and then compile it into different targets.

Does anyone know what exactly is meant by the claim that the new Active Record is, "built on top of relational algebra", particularly in light of the fact that not even RDBMS are strictly relational algebra?

I'm not an expert, but PgPool also servers as a local connection pooler, so for those purposes it won't be obsoleted.
