For one, at least since the New Deal, the strict constructionist interpretation of enumerated powers doesn't hold water. The federal government has a pretty broad interpretation of 'interstate commerce' which supersedes the list of 'enumer

I think the theory is that mafia guys will download stuff off the web, which presumably has backdoors they don't know about or understand, instead of hiring coders to write custom chat and email applications... Not that this will ever pass

According to the nytimes article, the proposal will likely include the requirement that you MUST have a backdoor in your encryption scheme. That effectively bans schemes without backdoors.

Wrong. Tor encrypts the channel from point to point. ISP doesn't know what you're saying.

I would argue that if you're really worried about grandma or the stay-at-home mom in Kansas, then even a 0.1% false positive rate is unacceptable, since it'll send a real email into a black hole.

Just explain your situation. That's what cover letters are for. Or in this day and age, the body of your email. They'll either say: 1) Why don't you try again when you're out here. 2) We'll fly you out for an interview, but relocation cos

And many of these 13 year olds were doing this before that thing called the world-wide-web was around. It made it rather difficult to do any real research, even if they wanted to.

Actually, the book has a lot of completely incorrect information. For example, it has a recipe for bananadyne. That's what I find offensive about it. I wouldn't trust any of the other recipes to not just blow up in your face even if exec

I don't know about SoundJam, but I'd argue that Google and Amazon bought the brand names YouTube and Zappos. Google wanted the 'eyeballs' attached to YouTube to sell more advertising. Amazon certainly has a big enough retail infrastructur

But did the actual website contain hate-speech? I know these guys are clowns, but internet-archives only has an old page from 2008. My google cache has some crackpot pages, but nothing that rises (in my mind) to the level of hate-speech:

Who says he didn't? A logical explanation doesn't change the analogy. I'm aware that S&M Gimps exist. If I went into an Apple Store where someone was being led around by a gimp, and no-one was paying attention, I'd still think that wa

Yes of course, but in the context of a DSL, you're not really defining a new syntax. You've still got an AST at the end of the day. And of course, this isn't an attack on lisp. If it works for you, cool. But I just don't see how that dis

Except you still need to give the macro a name, I don't think you can just write a macro that figures out: (1 + 2) (x = 1 + 2) It needs to be something like (!! 1 + 2) And you need to have spaces. (1+4/5) Won't work. And operator precedence

Actually, Lisps conveniently sidestep the whole issue by refusing to have ANY syntax. Which is fine if you like it. But you could just as easily argue lisp is bad for DSLs because you can't, for example, define an infix operator.

40-50% of marriages end in divorce. 50% of small businesses will be gone in five years. 80% in ten. That's across the board, not just high-risk tech startups.

I think asking them to return the card games the experiment. They might get paranoid and think it's some weird undercover sting. Or more likely, maybe they think they've found a sugar daddy who's going to start hooking them up every week,

I'd agree that's not rich, but plenty of people can and do survive on that. Obviously it varies from area to area, but 35% of households in the US make under 30,000 a year. And that's not all just twenty-two year-olds fresh out of school.

The thing is, at least in the US, 'yuppie' has been a derogatory term for those kind of guys for at least twenty years. That this guy self-identifies as a yuppie, and complains that the other yuppies are scumbags, is one of the many reason
