I'm in no way associated with UF, but I don't think the answer for why this is proposed is too difficult. Take this: CISE, the only department at UF engaged in Computer Software research, will become a teaching only department, and i

From The Tao of Programming, 3.1 ( http://www.canonical.org/~kragen/tao-of-programming.html#boo... ) There once was a man who went to a computer trade show. Each day as he entered, the man told the guard at the door: ``I am a great th

You know, if you feel wrong and guilty about something, it's a good sign YOU SHOULDN'T DO IT! You may not face legal repercussions, but I sure as Hell would never want to have anything to do with someone who's so treacherous, devious, moral

Depends. For servers, FreeBSD and OpenBSD hands down. Desktops are two different systems--Windows and Ubuntu Linux. I need direct access to the hardware for development (CUDA) on both, so I can't VM. Windows is needed simply because Linu

The title is a bit misleading. OS/2 (especially Warp) wasn't a failure from a technical standpoint. Rather, IBM treated it like a redheaded stepchild which detracted from its core systems of mainframes and AS/400s, because--you know--this

I agree with you (generally) on principal. However, employers don't like individuality. Individuality costs money and makes more work. Just conform to the cookie-cutter employment contract/workspace/toolsets, and don't rock the boat.

Don't let your experience with this one company demotivate you. You had what they wanted (they sought you out, not the other way around), and were willing to work with them on contractual terms. From the sound of it, you did things correc

There's just one problem with your post: you're thinking like a technologist, and not like an end-user. End-users don't want to have to learn an entirely new UI (read, a different way of doing things; or, "Where's my Start button? Everythi
