I agree with all of these statements. JK IMHO set their e-commerce business back 3 years at least. He was the champion of a horrific monolith that was delivered years late. Not quite sure what you are referring to in terms of making changes

That timing coincided with two pretty big unrelated things. Walmart had been rebuilding their backend systems on this monolithic system called Pangaea that was several years late and drained most of the resources of the engineering org duri

Just read the first one- it reads more like a novel than a textbook IMHO, though I may be biased- I have always been fascinated by networks and when I was coming of age this was the "high tech" of the time- I used to read RFCs for

I guess I just feel there is a real lack of creativity in gaming these days- There used to be a rich variety of games- puzzle/adventure games, RTSes, Simulation games, Flight/Space games of all kinds, and now its just kind of cond

I will even go farther and say that I feel like I have now been playing the same game for 25 years. The FPS genre gets some new tricks, but it's still the same basic game with a few new mechanics and tricks- I can pick up a game I have

Its a hoop to jump through to get things to work- and an external dependency. I mean I remember the days when I first got a cable modem, I could just start up IIS or Apache and immediately have a web page on the internet. With a little hack

I ordered stuff from Banana Republic Factory about a year ago. I was on their email list, saw something I liked in the ad, clicked on it, bought it. It was on sale, a shirt for like $30. I had good experiences with stuff I bought from them

This was likely in the works for months- I worked on a similar project while there, and lining up the integrations with external partners was time consuming across corporate boundaries. Actually a second read of the article shows that this

Thanks for making me aware of this- I missed the Deep Glacier announcement last year it seems. Glacier is already cost effective as is, but this will make it even cheaper! I use this as an offsite backup- that as long as disaster does not s

With backups, my assumption is that you will never need to restore except in real "oh shit" moments- fire, electrical system zapping, etc- and if those moments happen, you are willing to pay. I have been using synology for 13 year

I was trying to see if this was now better than Glacier- and aside from the SLA's being much better in terms of retrieval, I am not sure they make sense for a backup use case- where you are only really planning on downloading that data

While I agree that the Fed may be overplaying their hand, I disagree that Taleb has an otherwise outperforming strategy. The cost of hedging against black swan events is not zero, and has increased substantially since the financial crisis-
