Can you honestly say you remember the exact pacman syntax of how to perform a system upgrade or how to install a package? :-) For me the UX was a problem, even if technically the package management is good.

Seems a bit pointless to push a new standard when Swagger and JSON Schema already exist and are widely supported by all kinds of documentation browsers, API generators, validators and other tools. Competition is good of course, but I'd

I use Phenomic to generate static React websites. Served from Amazon S3/CloudFront, with Serverless (Lambda/API Gateway) for REST APIs as needed. This appears to be the cheapest and most reliable and autoscalable way to build web

The point raised in the article is in my opinion quite valid. Most services offered by Amazon are practically free for personal use and extremely convenient (no need to install, update and manage anything), so there is less and less incenti

Personally, after playing around with all kinds of game engines and frameworks, I always go back to Unity. It has a lot of warts and issues, but for me it's the most productive way to focus on actually creating games.

It's not strictly speaking an alternative to AWS Lambda, because you have to run your own IronFunctions server somewhere. So you will again have to manage servers instead of being serverless. It's nice to have this platform availa

Isn't the real answer to this to start a company (or some other form of organization)? Then the accounts and other ownerships are no longer tied to a single individual but to a virtual entity that can be controlled by other individual

I think I got downvoted by someone who doesn't like AWS. Anyway, the purpose was to say that you don't have to spin up virtual machines on AWS if you build your app with the serverless paradigm, and that fits small projects well b

I prefer to use AWS services that don't require any "spinning up": CloudFront/ACS/S3 for static web files, API Gateway/Lambda for backend, IoT for websockets. It takes some effort to configure everything, but t

ALB seems to be missing a critical part: hostname based routing. Currently all your container services have to be under the same FQDN. Also, the limit of 10 virtual hosts per ALB seems very artificial. Otherwise ALB could be used for virtua

IMHO, a startup should be purposefully focused on delivering fast results to prove its business value as quickly as possible. This goal often clashes with engineering-minded people, who would rather spend time on creating a stable, debt-fre

I would not be not easy to implement the full generic functionality of Lambda and API Gateway. But I think it would be fairly easy to just write some application-specific Express code to handle the API routing, and add some wrappers for Lam

I would claim that the microservice architecture of AWS Lambda & API Gateway (which is generally associated with Serverless applications) is not what causes vendor lock-in. It's pretty straightforward to implement the same environm

My experience has been that dealing with Haskell library dependencies is very inconvenient, which makes maintaining applications painful. You can make the dependencies work at one point in time, but upgrading them later is a painful process

You can do that if you have unlimited time. Eventually there's just too much "own shit" to take care of, if you keep adding all kinds of services. This is quite familiar to me, having run a bunch of email/web/contai

These arguments seem to be mostly related to Amazon API Gateway rather than Lambda. (Handling errors on invalid input, returning response codes other than 200.) Lambda was also first available for JavaScript before Python, so probably the J

I like extension cords that include both 230V and USB sockets, so you don't have to use power adapters for every device. Makes me wonder if electrical infrastructure could some day be updated to match modern usage patterns. Here's

Glacier is more comfortable to use through S3, where you upload and download files with the regular S3 console, and just set their storage class to Glacier with a lifecycle rule. I've used the instructions in here to do it: https:

I warmly recommend the Serverless framework for building basic web applications on AWS. It handles CloudFormation details for you, but lets you customize them if needed. Not suitable for every possible app though.
