Unless you actually do want to serve the low-res images first, to make the pages download and render faster initially. On 3G it probably makes a big difference.

Finnish people quite often find it easier to spell their name without the umlauts when appearing online. The situation used to be much worse when email headers and BBS usernames were still ASCII-only (before Unicode), but you still occasion

For me that link was kind of funny and a learning experience at the same time, of how to handle it when you post something publicly by accident (be cool about it). If people downvote, I shall accept the judgment. :-)

The problem is, people have limits to the amount of immaterial and material products they can consume (limited time, space). So eventually so much stuff is being produced, mostly automatically, that nobody can consume it any more. The only

Because it's in production and people are using it. When you rewrite a new implementation from scratch and deploy it, you make their lives miserable, because so many things will break. This is nearly inevitable. When talking about websites

Introduction to PDB is interesting if you've never tried PDB yet (the Python Debugger). The presenter shows an example of launching the debugger in the middle of a Django request, just by adding import pdb; pdb.set_trace() in the view code.

Having an opinionated, best practice default doesn't have to prevent customization. I have always thought Rails is better than Django in this sense. There's one clear default way to do things, and then you can customize if you need to.

I wonder what kind of maintainability benefits do the separate packages bring in this case? To me, having a lot of empty __init__.py files and subdirs reduces readability, so I like to maximize simplicity.

Seems complicated. I always use four simple files: settings.py settings_development.py settings_staging.py settings_production.py Where the first one has the defaults (usable for local development), and the others contain any o

Should be pretty easy for Pinterest to add proper server-side validation of pinned pages. (This trick is based on removing the meta tag from the DOM in the browser.)

It's kind of interesting that Google breaks TCP/IP protocol rules (RFC 3390) and their home page has never been valid HTML either.

I think storing state on servers is always a bad idea. State should be stored in a cookie in the user's browser, letting him decide when it expires.

I wonder if Celery could still use SWF as its backend in the future? Instead of having to manage your own EC2 instances and databases for the Celery daemons.

I think the "need" comes from the content owners, who refuse to license their material to services that don't implement a form of DRM that they approve of. It would of course be much easier if the content owners some day understood that DRM

If I understand correctly, this is to protect the content during delivery over Internet. But the user agent is free to do whatever it wants with the content once it gets the decryption key. I suppose servers could decline to give the keys o

Seems like it's similar to physically going to conferences and focusing on some topic 100%, instead of just watching the same video streams and presentations at home.

That seemed to be mostly a rant about what you _don't_ do with Prolog, not about what you actually can do. The example of exporting a spreadsheet to CSV doesn't sound too convincing of the language's miraculous powers.

I guess that means at some point the growing number of people born on Earth will have to be shipped to space. I hope there are enough volunteers and space ships. Meanwhile, I'd also keep in mind this curve, posted earlier on HN: http://en.

That sounds just silly. Here in Finland, we can actually choose to either use free public dental care, or go to a more expensive private doctor and pay the difference. Dental care is essential. Even if you don't have pain, constant inflamma

I totally agree. I've been wondering for 15 years why every website has to have a special custom design anyway. With native apps, custom design almost always works against them, as opposed to the OS's default, familiar design. Maybe in the

Do you have any advice on the MongoDB issues to be aware of in this kind of usage? I wonder if there is a checklist somewhere.
