Having a mental model of how the google search ranking works sounds… hard. For me the mental model works out to be "based on various statistics, google's best match for my search terms". I'm not sure that's different from "the best answer"

That may be, but I think you want to think about specifics, not "seems like it's already pretty big!" Apple had 8.7% of the phone market last quarter. It's as low as that because the majority of phones sold today are not smartphones. Do you

llvm-gcc is not going to be globally broken or not broken. Like all software, it has bugs, and the bugs may or may not affect you. An 'example' that is actually a bug in the program is not very convincing of generic broken-ness. Try agai

Yes, I have. I wouldn't count the raw performance counters as easy to use, though. They're usable by experts familiar with the specific chip being profiled. Getting actual latency as opposed to misses and particularly visualizing it is mayb

What I would like to see is support in performance tools, like Instruments on Mac/iOS, for understanding and visualizing the effects of memory latency on your code. Sampling tools have been an incredible step forward for understanding why y

Actually, it turned out to be more interesting than that. False tldr! It had to do with the way the cache is addressed - just shifting one or the other array over in memory so all the parallel indexes weren't at the same offset from the beg

I was originally thinking the same, but I think it's because I was considering everything to be body text in a paragraph. If you think of them as potentially word marks, it seems valid to use tight OR wide overall spacing, really more of a

I haven't analyzed this algorithm for correctness (nor even understood it), but it doesn't run in polynomial time. In every iteration of the outer loop, it compares 2^2^n bits, where n is the number of variables. It looks like he's basica

I had a similar reaction to grandparent. On reflection, my issue is that while the author may intend this as a tribute to steve, it comes across to me as exploitation. The author uses steve's death to advance an ideology. You say "poetry

This looks very cool, and I will just add that I don't think it's specific to even apps at all. It's relevant for anything that would get talked about on blogs, twitter, etc. I have my own annoying aggregation stuff set up, and I'd love to

I do not think the point was that this isn't reliable or profit-generating. My take was that "reliable" and "profit-generating" are goals he finds sad and distressing. Perhaps the founder feels an incredible passion about stickers and think

No. The existing Cocoa system was constraint based too, just more restrictive constraints (view to superview only). CoreAnimation had a constraint based layout system, Carbon had a constraint-based system.. just "constraint-based" doesn't

That sounds reasonable, but I'm curious if you have data on satisfaction as reported by the founders? As your reputation grows, you may be getting better results partially through having higher quality startups, which would cloud the issue.

This argument seems strange to me. UIKit was written, from the ground up, by people who either worked on AppKit or worked with AppKit, with full access to the AppKit source base. They share almost all design patterns, and some source code.

That's actually separate. That's talking about a UIImage purging data, but in this case, it's the entire UIImage that is discarded from the cache that holds UIImages indexed by name.
