So what's the solution here? How else would you improve those kinds of neighborhoods? Do you expect the poor people are going to suddenly all get better jobs and simultaneously decide to make their neighborhood nicer?

What a sad way to view life. Doctors and other medical staff are overworked, and that's not a good thing that everyone else should aspire to. Have fun working your way into a heart attack at 45 I guess.

I'm not saying owning a house is a bad thing - as long as you crunched the numbers and made sure beforehand, it can be the right decision. Helpful calculator: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/upshot

To play devil's advocate - if you have shitty neighbors, it's much better to be renting than owning because it's easier to let your lease expire and find a new place to rent rather than having to consider selling your house.

Yep, those are other factors to take into consideration. There's a give and take for each option. If dealing with landlords is that much worse for you than having to pay for all repairs no matter what, then owning might be a better opt

Yeah I think that's the tough part - everything was very different 20 years ago, so when people's parents offer advice it's relevant to what worked well for them then, rather than what would be best for them now.

So many of my peers, many of whom are up to their neck in student loan debt and have mediocre paying jobs, seem hellbent on buying a house, usually due to the "rent is throwing your money away bro!" argument. Did you know you don&

While you're technically correct (the best kind of correct!) in that a year of experience assumes a 40 hour work week, I don't think anyone would let you add extra years. A year of experience just means you did that job for a year

I don't think that's a fair comparison here - what if they only spent 5 hours a week coding? Would they be able to say they have a year of experience after one year of that? I think when it comes to work experience, a year of expe

Let's do some basic math - she makes $400,000 a year, on 131 units. 400,000 / 131 / 12 = $254 a month per unit. That's really not a ton of money for each one. $254 for your own place to live isn't a bad deal. Additi

I find companies that do the whole "we're a family, we're changing the world!" thing to be worse than your standard corporate gig that is more up front about you just being a cog in the machine. At least those companies

True - but most of those products support or interact with the core apple products. Amazon offers way more things, like toilet paper and cat food. I'm not sure how they're supposed to interact with a Kindle.

True, but the point of the Apple store is to sell Apple products, and the Google Play store only sells google devices. Amazon supposedly sells everything. It wasn't created to only sell Amazon products, and it's misleading to cons

I think this guy may actually just be dumb. Yes, C-Suite positions make more money, and get to make more decisions. If he wanted to do that, it sounds like he could have at any time. Of course just being a programmer would earn you less. &g
