I think master locks are a much more prevalent example of this.

I have a terrible feeling that WSJ is using hackernews here. This post is pretty meaningless, and the title does not agree with the few sentences of an "article." "Quiting" has a much different connotation than being funded by your employer

What is your proposal to automate this? Remember there is very large delay and blackouts that happen. After they do it by hand several times, sure automate it.

I have a text document on my computer that lists all the websites/programs with username/password. I also use autocomplete (which IMO is basically the same as having a document with all passwords.) I can have unique passwords for every sing

I would be fine with a data transfer cap, if it scaled with technology or time. However looking at my internet provider, I have not seen an increase in the data cap since it was implemented. Meanwhile both services and technological capabil

I wonder how much role models actually play a role. I got into programming because I loved programming, it was something I could do at home with minimal ramp up time or gear.

I fail to see the relevance of this. In addition it somewhat upsets me that someone could get jail time for making an offensive comment. Depending on the jurisdiction or culture, I know I have said things that would be offensive to someone

I've read a lot of ebooks (even long before I got a kindle) and I have to say that I read them for the story, not the presentation. What is wrong with ebooks is that there are still books that I _cannot_ buy. I want to give the publishers/w

I don't understand why you have to "develop hardware" for this. Unless you are willing to produce hardware at a loss its already incredibly cheap to take off the shelf parts and put together a media box. To me it sounds like a lot of over e

This has alternate spellings (data-alternative-spellings). So you can type America and it will show United States.

When I can get a game for free that has fewer restrictions than something I pay for then the system is broken. Looking at you Ubisoft.

Internships are supposed to be the real world training though. It seems highly unethical for companies to take advantage of interns because by definition interns are inexperienced. I had great internships and never felt like I had to be vig

One thing I'm somewhat confused about is why a bailout is better than default. In both cases the banks cannot pay back loans so their credit is worthless right? In a bailout the government becomes the bank (through a proxy) but its still th

I don't understand how this is sad. All it showed was that people skipped a word that had "bananas" in it, a word that has pretty much no meaning in the context of the article. Its similar to how I ignore spelling mistakes in news articles.

The menu style seems very close to the style already in Windows 7 for Wordpad. Personally I find that style both confusing and clunky.

Probably the biggest reason I will leave a game unfinished is if it takes too much effort to get back into the game. There are plenty of times I will take a break from a game, even one I really enjoy playing, and more often than not it is

Not necessarily true. Often there is application state that you don't want to lose, which isn't saved. For example if you have open IM/IRC windows or if you have multiple opened Documents that you are reading that are saved. Though I think

From one view I understand at least some of the reasons they are doing this. 1) Money. D3 is free to play so monetizing non-subscription aspects makes sense. 2) People will buy in game items for real money so bringing that out of the dark

There are plenty of times when a resume is not required for a hire. A recommendation can replace it, chatting with the person in a dev irc channel, contributions to open source, etc. You aren't required to do any of those things, but it mak

It seems that the cost of fabbing your own gps chip would be peanuts compared to the cost of even one missile. Given the raw GPS data its pretty trivial to do all location processing in software.
