Whether you co-lo or run in the cloud it seems to me that you would still want the same types of redundancy/failover processes in place. The advantage of EC2 is you can easily set up servers in multiple places across the globe (or at least

This article had zero scientific conclusions (or in fact any science at all) and the title said "we" in the non-royal sense. Why is this here? And the article even says they don't know whey a bike stays upright: "What their math can't appar

Is hiring 800 people really that big of a deal for a place like SF? The article made it sound like 2400 new jobs accounted for not only most of the tech jobs in SF, but most of the growth all together.

Hasn't this been the same story for every windows mobile OS though? I gotta say I would be in the "gotta see it to believe it" phase if I were a mobile developer.

I use AWS both for work and for personal (love the free tier micro to play around with on my own time) and I am always impressed with how polished new features feel.

If I could easily update python so that yum still worked fine on centos I would definitely start using python3. As it is I'm still stuck with python2.4 for a majority of the stuff I write.

US Companies, including Google involve themselves in politics (both domestic and international) all the time. I think it is a bit silly to say that "tech companies don't want to take political positions".

Do employers actually care about a degree in CS anymore? It seems that evaluating skill (which you can learn in school or out) is way more important than a piece of paper. Deciding to pay for said piece of paper, but not learning anything i

As an average merchant you wouldn't have any reason to care about the ethical actions of large companies like VISA unless you were affected. These types of actions (right or wrong) force you to care. In fact, this is one of the core princip

I definitely disagree with this. I cannot see how women can be both things to be protected, and be taken as seriously as their male peers.

Money already speaks volumes in elections so I would rather have a human being actually show they can have an effect beyond that. Not to sound like a paranoid, but how can the government follow the consent of the governed when those in powe

If your goal is to make money, then a few hundred dollars to buy into the platform is meaningless. If your goal isn't to make money then why would you develop for a platform that you don't have access to?

140 pages reduced to a six word headline, impressive. Can someone clue me in on where to look for this 82% stat? My keyword search mostly turned up 1982. edit: I see for 2008 we have a 20% passionate stat overall. 18% firm employed, but 43%

This is good and all, but does this give us new news? I'm new to HN and even I have seen some of these linked directly before. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a HN trophy room or something that we link to?
