My journey in CG began in the 80's at MIT on a Symbolics Lisp Machine. Some fond memories I've recorded here: https://medium.com/@kaveh808/from-arcmac-to-the-media-lab-22...

Compare the 10-year effort for the ANSI standardization of Common Lisp with the two-week, ill-considered marketing-directed creation of JavaScript, now one of the world's most popular languages, and the resultant decades of technical d

I have a cunning plan to become independently wealthy. Should come to fruition real soon now. :) Perhaps an IDE for LFE would be a place to start? Does such a thing exist?

We hit a local maximum in language design with Common Lisp in the 80's. I mean putting in the hard work to make a language be as powerful as you can imagine. Today the market moves too fast, priorities have changed, and there seems to

The one genuinely successful Lisp company I can think of was ITA/Orbitz. They were acquired by Google, who AFAIK still maintains the Common Lisp code base.

Congratulations on both implementing the game through to release and all you have done for the Common Lisp community in the process.

You can find videos of the machines in use online. This was in 1985. The Symbolics machines did not have any special 3D hardware. The SGI boxes were the first to do so. The Symbolics did have a "high resolution" (around 1K pixels

Regarding the question of "Why [Common] Lisp?"... I did early Lisp development on Symbolics Lisp Machines back in the day. Wrote 3D graphics on them. I didn't realize how special the development environment was until I got my

Thank you. Glad you are enjoying my videos. This longer demo of an early version of kons-9 talks about some CL features: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJe4isZ7NHI&list=PLTA6M4yZF0...

Very flattered to see kons-9 mentioned. It is wonderful to be back developing in CL after so many years. I hope 2023 will see a community of users grow around the system. I would love to see what uses people put it to. That, after all, is w

We do seem to be in an odd transitionary period as you say. I got basic 3D graphics for my Common Lisp system up and running rather quickly using early OpenGL calls which I was familiar with. I first used GL from SGI in the mid-80's. W

A good watch indeed. Mechanical film production is all but dead. It's all a digital pipeline now. Curiously, all the new technology has failed to make the creation of VFX movies less costly. We made "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Wit

When I was looking to start a new software project, I asked myself some questions, with the aim of formulating a project which would be fun/play. Otherwise why do it? Q: What software domain did I want to work in? A: 3D graphics. More

A cheesy video trailer can't hurt. Even for something as niche as a 3D system written in Common Lisp. :) https://youtu.be/i0CwhEDAXB0 Video can get some exposure, though it is more work than a blog post.

USD is a very complex standard. Is there a layered 3D/animation interchange format that allows for relatively painless scene interchange? By layered I mean something where each feature builds on the previous features. Something like: 1

High school in Paris. A PDP 11/32 running BASIC on a teletype. I learned how to make ASCII art posters copied from Creative Computing magazine. Independently invented/rediscovered run length encoding.

The solution might be to develop a niche modeling solution with appropriately high level tools for your domain, as opposed to a general polygon modeler.

We are developing an open source 3D system, and what could set it apart from existing tools such as Blender is an interesting question. In our case we are taking a different tack by developing in Common Lisp, which will give us a powerful R
