We do but they are awful and flawed...Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk etc...we revere the rich as if they were gods. I would not be surprised if John Gruber has prayed to Steve at least once.

They mention their existing solar capacity in the article. Presumably this will also grow over time. Doing anything at sea would surely be 10x as complicated and expensive...Texas has wind and open space and roads.

These landmines show that the Go language compatibility guarantee was made too early.

I love the idea of a "read only" map (or any other type), but it seems it is just a side-effect landmine in this case. Yuck...almost strikes me as a bug as described in the article

If only one could go back in time and fix the weird overloading of nil for pointers and interfaces...it is the one breaking change to the Go1 language guarantee that seems worth it.

Last I checked the average corporate lifespan in the US is 25 years, so these numbers don't seem abnormal to me. Indeed it is amazing that IBM is even still around. I find it more peculiar that people think companies "must" (

Speaking as an "old" (46), most of my colleagues have truly rotted out. The typical HN reader will be given to self-improvement and curiosity...but outside of this bubble many others have to be dragged kicking and screaming.

I'm 46 now and holding out until I get to 50, at which point I fully intend to promote myself to employers as a token they can put in their diversity promotional material they promote as an antidote to criticisms.

You don't necessarily sacrifice those when choosing a third party. We all apparently work in related industries...do you and your colleagues sit around and dream up ways to exploit customers? I don't, nor do those I work with.

You are always partially in someone else's hands unless you happen to own a private, dedicated connection to your client.

Agreed. OpenStack is a total dumpster fire, yet still companies like RedHat push it. I narrowly avoided a long term (career-derailing) OpenStack assignment...four days in...oh, this is all based on OpenStack?... transfer approved

Not only that, but "tradespeople" start earning right after high school. That four-five year head start is more meaningful than people realize. You could be making a down payment on owning your residence while your friends are sti

It really requires a rethinking of the need for college, how college should work, and how it should be paid for. Most undergraduates have no real need to obtain a gold-plated degree. Undergraduate education in nearly all fields is well-unde

Its nice that you earned your black-belt in self-discipline, but it doesn't benefit society much for you to become a miser to pay for a piece of paper. We are in a consumption economy...we need you spending money on things that create

This will impact every other aspect of our consumption economy...home sales and even car sales will be impacted as working adults have to dedicate more and more earning potential to paying off student loans...far in excess of any real econo

My least favorite FreeBSD default: permissions for CD/DVD burning. I get the high-minded position FreeBSD takes here, but it is also a total PITA and it seems pretty clear that if you are putting a CD/DVD in a host's tray, yo

Problem is...North Korea is a legitimate existential threat to a key US ally (South Korea) and a meaningful threat to others (Japan). We have fun laughing at North Korea but they are armed to the teeth and are indeed capable of turning Seou

Why not just tell users that Facebook does not endorse or condone any specific user content? No one blames Verizon if someone uses a racist insult on the phone...there is precedent for users grasping how a common carrier works. Of course th

Lacking a "public" internet, users are always going to have their expression beholden to the standards of some private entity. Even if you self-host, your ISP reserves the right to define their own idea of "abuse". Whe

It is racist and hurtful in the same way calling US Southerners before the Civil War a bunch of slavers...intended to wound, but also based in fact. Look at what was "Saudi Arabia" prior to the discovery of oil. These people were

Please. At the time of the US invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11, it wasn't even a nation state in the modern sense, it was a crater that was periodically claimed by one faction or another. The US entry was as strategically useful

People buying an electric car are already in a mindset for experimenting, so they are good candidates for design departures. BMW and Mercedes have lost their edge in styling, any experimentation is a good thing.

Embrace contrived progress meters. I put every trivial to-do related to a repo into a github issue. I commit routinely, even for small changes, with a short message. These stink of make-work, but they expose my progress to my other remote c
