It's interesting how STREAMS pervaded everything for a short while (Apple's Open Transport networking stack for System 7.5 and up was also based on STREAMS) but everyone almost immediately wanted to get rid of it and just use Berk

The AV1 codec has support to tell the decoder to generate fake film grain, so you can add back all the noise lost in compression. Although I don't think it's very widely used, I dunno if that's due to the compressors or decom

I've gotten to experience using RealPlayer again this year[0] and... a lot of it was just it being really early but a lot of it was just the software being really bloated with adware and terrible design decisions. It asks for your home

It's crazy how even today, VLC still can't scrub in an h264 video and even skipping around takes seconds for it to catch up while QuickTime Player (AVFoundation) can scrub around in realtime. Early QuickTime was a miracle playing

Local models will make a lot more sense once we have the scale for it, but when your user count is still small paying cents per image is a much better deal than paying for a GPU either in a data center or physically. Local models are defini

The 10gbit connection costs me ¥5,000/mo (around USD 30/mo), which was actually slightly cheaper than I was paying for 1 Gbit... The main issue is latency and bandwidth across the oceans since Asia far away from the US where a lot

Ever since the analog TV shutdown and the refarming of those low frequencies to 4G LTE, you see that 4G actually has higher coverage than 2G/3G (this both in sparsely-populated places like Australia and dense ones like Japan). And for

Where I am most of the systems have an option to use static printed QR codes that the payer scans. This is easy to use for small businesses like bars since it requires zero hardware or staff training. There have been reports of people print

QR is not ideal but as long as Apple keeps such a tight leash on NFC payments, it's the only "open" option. It's ironic that by trying to keep NFC payments so secure, they've instead caused the wide proliferation of

I have a few cheap Realtek 2.5Gbps dongles spread around my house and get 2.3 Gbps TX and 1.9 Gbps RX (running iperf3 --bidir to a LAN machine with 10 Gbps). Still beats Wi-Fi by a mile so I'm not complaining.
