I agree. But it doesn’t hurt to put up preemptive defense. In fact, the OS should also isolate and encrypt per-app profiles. And when one app wants to access data that belongs to another app, it should ask the user’s permission. I don’t kno

I was assuming that your steam account ID isn’t persisted in cleartext on disk either. Failing that, we could have a key that’s just stored on the Steam cloud and requires login to retrieve.

On a related note, Steam could (should?) also encrypt that data on disk, using a key derived from your Steam account ID (not your Steam password, because you may need to change the password), so that no other process can snoop on your Steam

How does HN even know that there are enough people interested in CK2? Nevertheless, CK2 is an amazing undertaking. I never really played CK2. I used to play KOEI's Nobunaga's Ambition and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Those games

And then there's the question of whether you want to consider translations to be equivalent.

I’d argue that Debian’s “stability” should be a process/policy thing. It should be orthogonal to the tooling. Just because you have a “stability-first” policy doesn’t mean you should be enforcing it through crappy tooling.

Cool idea. One thing that’s annoying about dealing with books (not just this platform in particular) is that there can be multiple editions of the same book where the contents are essentially the same. This is especially true for work that

I wonder if HN readers just have a higher tendency to not care about fancy food. I’m that kind of person. I also don’t care about varying my clothing unless absolutely necessary for the occasion. I’d rather save my money for other things th

I have a hard time believing that something written on sophos.com can be so click-baity/devoid of substance. Half of it is vulnerability vs exploit in eli5 style, and then the rest is just mentioning FileReader in passing.

I'm a fan of Purism for what they do, even though I don't own any of their products yet. But how do they even justify this sentence, given that CPU design and fabrication are full of compromises? "The i.MX8M Quad is the most

Can somebody write up a tutorial/guide on how to block all network communications (incoming or outgoing) with Australian IPs, on all or select ports, under common OSes (Windows, Linux, Mac, BSD).

Shower thought: make a system where you unlock and start your car using your iPhone’s Face ID or Touch ID, and you can drive the car via the phone, like in Golden Eye. That would be really cool. I don’t care about security. It just sounds r

“Greater Toronto Area” = GTA. What a coincidence. Jokes aside, this is bound to happen. It’s disturbing that a vulnerability like this isn’t caught as a show-stopper before the technology is sold to consumers.

An obvious, and probably stupid question to ask: Does UDP NAT traversal work well enough nowadays with minimal user intervention? Remember that UDP itself is stateless. So you either need some explicit port mapping via UPnP (which seems lik

I suck at math, but just out of curiosity: mathematically speaking, can such "wire" structure be made in N dimensions? Let's say a wire struction in 4 dimensions that will project to different 3D objects.
