This was my experience too :) Was a bit more promiscuous with where I helped out, including UN, Graal Kingdoms and Zone, but also spent a lot of time building my own playerworlds. I owe my career to that game!

Wow lots of people here who played Graal. I spent 10 years of my life on that game and I can credit it with giving me my start in development. Learning to script for the game became my first step towards programming in general. In fact, dev

I’ve done this too. Quite the contrast to my disorganised life. I have two types: lined and square paper. Both hardback and book bound (find ring binds don’t play nice with me and I lose pages). Get the exact same ones each time, apart from

Can echo this. A colleague’s node container was maxing out CPU and just removing PM2 and running node directly solved the problem. That was easier than debugging why PM2 was having such a hard time. To be fair, it was a straight up conversi

I came to realise this too. Using Homebrew and multiple users is excruciating and an eye opener on how system-level software should really be installed. Homebrew insists on avoiding root privileges whilst also installing packages system-wid

Aye, I noticed this too and I’ve never written a line of production C# in my life. On the projects I’ve worked on recently, the backend often ended up far more complex than the frontend, taking up more time to build and maintain. This is na

This is my feeling too. I’ve written plenty of bash scripts to automate common tasks. Colleagues won’t open them up and extend or maintain them (some developers won’t touch bash). But if they have an easy to use, well documented interface,

Interesting how close our timelines match up, minus the 11 years. Smoked from 14 to just before my 30th birthday, which was 6 months ago. If I smell it in passing, it smells pretty disgusting. But if I spend the weekend at my parents (both

Yeah, I prefer an actual module system over PHP namespaces plus autoloader. It feels like a hacked on module system tbf. BUT I do get lots of real work done using namespaces and a PSR autoloader so it works. I do wish they would extend auto

This is roughly PHP’s approach. In this case, Illuminate is the vendor prefix and Mail is the package name. This often but not always corresponds to the rules around the composer package name, which would be illuminate/mail in this cas

Yeah, I was about to mention Doom. There’s a whole subreddit dedicated to running Doom on the weird and wonderful. Even had an eInk device running Doom, which looked painful but cool.

Was just about to comment with this link. A useful counterpoint whenever Clean Code comes up. I do think this article makes a lot of valid criticisms and it’s well worth a read. I remember being influenced by it early on but then re-read it

My mum did but that’s only because there was an insane deal and she got 1,000 rolls for like £10. Sadly, this was right before the toilet roll shortage from panic buying before the first UK wave of Covid and she’d give them all away by that

And killer whales. Big, carnivorous and hooved with lots of teeth. Those are ungulates too. Interestingly enough, Judaism uses rumination, in part, to determine whether an animal is okay to eat. It was called “chewing their cud”. Pigs don’t

Me and my partner have fallen into this pattern too, down to sharing interesting passages from whatever ebook we’re reading. I’ve read more books in the past month than I have the entire year!

> You (i.e. your body) are clearly aware of yourself (i.e. your body.) QED. Reminds of “I think therefore I am” except a body doubting self-awareness shows the body is aware of the thing it doubts the existence of. Nice.

I was thinking of this exact documentary when reading the comment above. It was fascinating how the octopus seemed to have trust and opened up to him. Disagreed with his reasoning when she was being attacked - if she’s a friend, help her. S
