Firefox is the first major browser to support CSS Grids out of the box. https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2017/01/css-grid is a simple introduction to it. http://gridbyexample.com/

+1 for redux-observables, I've found RxJS to be an excellent tool for managing async without going insane. I'd also second the notion to be rigorously consistent in following the semantics. I always end up regretting shortcuts.

It's an open source media centre application - used to be called XBMC. The illegal stuff are plugins for the software. I haven't used it since it was XBMC, quite a few years ago, but I imagine you could definitely plug things like

I'm a big fan of JSNice - it's easily the best JS beautifier I've used. It's twice saved my bacon, really helping to make sense of some horrible, buggy third-party code.

Totally understood. There is something pretty cool about having an object that you bought integrated into a national museum's collection though, knowing that it'll be preserved and exhibited and quite possibly outlive you. Imagine

That reminds me. I know the National Media Museum[1] in Bradford, UK are looking for a good-condition generation 1 iPod to acquire. If anyone has one that they want to put into a national museum collection, I'm sure they'd be inte

I completely agree about most commercially available WP themes... but it's eminently possible (and quite easy) to roll your own very good theme, if you like the WP interface.

There's honestly no need for React/Angular/etc to necessarily power a SPA, you can just use it to build smaller components. I initially got started with Angular to power a reusable video "widget" component on a Word

As a member since July 14, 2009, I have nothing but praise for Pinboard. It does exactly what I'd like it to do and gets out of my way doing it. I've received tremendous value for money for my tiny fee.

I usually only install one or two plugins on client sites. The main draw is the fairly good interface and the extremely wide brand familiarity. If you know what you're doing with it, it can be a very nice admin experience.

I'd also recommend looking into Bedrock, as it neatly sets you up for updating via Composer, which is quite nice once you get used to it. Good thing to fire off on a post-deploy hook. Then you can completely disable any internal update

I see a lot of complaints about toy app size/complexity. There's definitely a judgement call to makes about app complexity when someone starts a project with a framework. I inevitably find that development in the middle/end o

I think there's definitely a tone problem in his first response, but if you continue reading the thread, you'll see that everything else is very positive. I guess it was just a bit of the classic internet text expression problem.

That's why I don't randomly paste in code from SO. I do use it readily as a resource, but it's not my first port of call, and I always make sure I understand any code that I take from there. It's extremely useful for exp

This is a common misconception. You're not actually writing HTML. You're writing `React.createElement` calls in an HTML-like syntax. This is just to make it very easy and fairly pleasurable to write your templates out.

I saw and reported some plagiarised content at Sitepoint. After what I assume was a fact-checking and research period, they got in touch and told me they were taking down the plagiarised material and banning that submitter. Not only that, b

The JSON API is getting baked into the next core release, and dogfooding it is (afaik) on the medium-term cards. Have you tried version 2? Personally I found it substantially easier to work with than v1.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, it's not rendering any views, it's returning queried data. I guess you could call the JSON a rendered view if you wanted to. Are you concerned about being coupled to the particular shape

It's very slick, but also rather confusing. Perhaps in future releases you can work towards making the page creation process more structured and predictable.

Wordpress (yes I know) has a pretty robust JSON API plugin[1], which is being rolled into core as of the next release (4.4). This means it's dead easy to have a familiar CMS experience and then pull out the data in whatever way you wan

Those are not the original physical artefacts though. Digitisation is immensely important for access of content, but it's not preservation.

In very basic terms - one of the biggest boons of jQuery were patching over browser incompatibilities. The tradeoff was an extra library being downloaded and a small performance trade-off (in certain scenarios). In 2015 most browsers are in
