A big part is engineering culture. At Google having multiple versions of a thing is an exceptional situation. But it's also acceptable (to an extent) to refactor other peoples' code and send them PRs. If you need to make a signifi

I don't know what it is about the original DOOM games, but I just haven't felt the same joy playing any more modern shooters. Maybe it's the experience created by Doomguy's ridiculous running speed, or the sheer number o

I know that corporate meeting room A/V is often an issue, but Google has pretty much solved that in their own offices. Their internal deployment of Meet works very well.

Wonder if they've looked at Bazel and rules_ios [1] (or similar)? Bazel brings caching and reproducible builds (all but eliminating the need for clean builds) in addition to transparent remote build execution. I haven't use the iO

Yeah, I'm not sure how long it was broken. Slack's support for public instances seems a bit strange. Even the new invite code is only good for 2000 new members or something, after which that link will again redirect to the page th

There was an issue with the sign-up link that was fixed a few days ago. https://slack.bazel.build/ should work now. It's a public Slack and was always intended to be, as far as I know.

X12 is also used for freight rail messaging in the US. Anytime one railroad interchanges a train with another (in addition to many other types of events), messages are sent. I deal with it on most days.

It mostly grew out of using Nix to fetch a python interpreter for builds and tests. By default, Bazel will use whichever python binary is on the host (if any), which can lead to discrepancies between build hosts and various developer machin

We use Nix + Bazel. Nix builds the base image with Python and whatever else we want. Bazel layers our actual Python app on top of it. No dockerfiles at all. Example: https://github.com/jvolkman/bazel-nix-example

My preference is to install Proxmox on a small x86 machine with enough NICs and virtualize OpenWRT. One could also virtualize OPNSense (or VyOS, which I ran previously), but for me, OpenWRT is enough. I use this to route gigabit WAN: https
