Well, leaving my phone at home is my version of self control... I know myself well. What you're saying reminds me of minimalist phones though. Devices that are not powerful enough to do more than messaging etc. I should get one.

Love it. I love leaving my house without my phone when I have the opportunity. I cannot remember the last time I did anything productive or important phone frankly, other than 2FA or sending an email that I could have sent from my computer.

Just looking at the press conference slides, some notable stuff in there. "The challeng ... Cut global GHG emissions by nearly half by 2030." I don't know why they bother putting that in there, it is obviously not going to ha

I would love to say this comes as a surprise, but it really does not. UN Secretary-General Guterres really foreshadowed that last year, and he did not mince his words. Really unusual for somebody that role, usually it is more of a diplomat-

Labor cost really isn't the factor in offshoring we think it is. Servers for AI are not free, and workers in India are really cheap, similarly to how minimum wage workers in the US are really cheap compared to robots that need constant

It's because ten year ago, everybody already talked about AI making developer jobs etc. redundant within ten years. And now (or at least a year ago) we have more developers than ever. Somehow the breakthrough is always ten years away.

Just saw on Wikipedia that they joined Y Combinator in 2017. You always learn interesting stuff from reading the news on this site...

Good point. And the price of these goods--beef in particular--is completely decoupled from the disproportionate damage it causes. If it was air pollution, we would call it a market failure.

Let's be honest with ourselves. We won't be able to tell "real" data from ai-generated data and end up training our data on ai-generated data.

That sounds like it would be ripe for abuse. If companies get $$$ for big samples, there is an incentive to fake it. And garbage in=garbage out. Quality of AI/ML models might even degrade if the "raw material" is contaminated

I think it's true that the Amish deserve respect as craftspeople, but it's still important to maintain some critical distance. They are still deeply religious folks, with orthodox views who cede a lot of control to their local pas

Whatever it is they are doing... When I open Spotify, I usually know what I want to listen to. I strongly suspect the redesign is going to make it so that it takes me more time to get there, which is a bad thing.

I think you could literally take Twitter's code base from 10 years ago and set up a server and people would flock to it. Building something new is really not what is required, the bigger question is what people, what community.

Makes me wonder about the real meaning of all those Punisher patches that some of them wear. We tend to think of gangs as coherent forces, but identity is not always that clear-cut.

You would be right about that. "Sellers only pay the ad fee when a potential customer clicks on their Amazon listing. If no one clicks then there's no cost. As your ad is representative of your product and your Amazon listing is p

Yes, but the language model does not have the feedback mechanism we have. We can test ideas against reality. Language models can make up all kinds of crap until there is data somewhere mentioning that it's not going to work. You could

What's interesting is that in this model a lot of companies might be paying for ads without ever seeing a return, because they cannot outbid those at the top. In that case, Amazon would be sponging up money from a lot of players and re

It is different to what you do. If I tell you that this is already a thing, you might go back to the drawing board, and do something from scratch. Maybe do some abstract drawing with numbers for brainstorming. A language model is not able t

This is not the solution it seems. Too often, aquaculture uses wild-caught fish as feed. Great way to reduce waste, not a great way to protect the marine environment. At the moment, there is not a lot fish on the market that you can eat wit

The funny thing is that it is neither lying, nor inventing something new. What OpenAI did pretty well was collect data. And wouldn't you know it, the folks who developed that new puzzle describe it as what it is---a new kind of puzzle.
