It's not a result of being logged in. I was logged in, and signed out, and dogpile was still above altavista when I refreshed the page. However, when I cleared my cookies, Altavista and dogpile switched places. Most likely due to this : ht

Indeed, I've noticed in the niche we're in, several sites have copied the wording on our advertising sign up page. Of course, it's complemented by strong similarities to our layout and functionality, but there's something that seems more bl

We've had several people imitate our site, not just in overall functionality but to the point of copying specific phrases, design elements, the layout and so on. I agree though that they might be able to get that far, but what they're lack

I have another server with Slicehost, and it's been down once in the past year. Overall I'm somewhat more please with Slicehost. These are the two linode issues that affected us: http://www.linode.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4822&sid=1c

Both times I've had issues it was definitely not my connection. One time the disk went out on our cluster, and they also 'took the opportunity' to apply an upgrade. The next time it was 'network problems' at the datacenter. Both of these we

I've heard a lot of good things about Linode, but I can't say I'm thrilled at the moment. I have a site partially hosted on Linode and the Dallas datacenter has had two failures in the past month, during our busiest time of the day. People

Well, they've certainly received a lot of publicity out of this. I read Tech Crunch an average amount and I actually wasn't aware at all of this device until recently. The device looks fairly average to me, and I can't image spending that m

Pretty ridiculous. Why not just make one version for internal distribution, and a completely separate document for the public?

I don't find screencasts useful, I suppose for the same reason I don't like video interviews. It requires a different sort of attention than text and is more time consuming. There's no cut and paste for code in screencasts, and I find it di

Mmm... maybe I'm just feeling flibbly today but I'm not a big fan of this. It makes me feel seasick for some reason.

When I start IE6, About 1/3 of the time rather than open the homepage I have set, it loads Microsoft's IE8 download page. This doesn't seem to be new. Is IE6 really that prevalent still? I don't work on a particularly tech-oriented site, an

We're down to 37% IE these days. Only 8% are IE6, for a total of under 5% IE6 usage. I don't really know what the difference is between our site and the sites that say they have 65% IE still... it's not at all oriented towards techy type pe

I personally don't care about having a Facebook account any more than I be buffing up my MySpace account or a WoW character anytime soon. This cartoon sums it up my attitude pretty well: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zp_eKXDTiU0/SiQyLywcJ7I/AA

I agree, the number of views is less important than the number of answers. The font for both of them is too large. To be honest I think Stack Overflow needs a bit of a redesign. The fonts are all a bit too large, and it's the same on this n

It looks great! I never played this game, but loved the semi-sequel, Flashback. I'm having issues with Firefox 3.0.15 on Linux, though. It slowed to 5 fps and essentially froze. I'll try Chrome.

I could do without the term as well. It's like calling FreeBSD 'NoNT' or Linux 'NoWindows'. Just because SQL is what people are used to using for persistence doesn't make this a good name for an alternative style.

Yep, #1 happened to me the other day. We hit our Apache server limit of 256 and the site slowed to a crawl. I'm not really sure what was causing the load to be like 50-90, but requests were quite delayed waiting for an open process (keepali

Ubuntu handles older devices better than Vista, for the most part. Most newer ones are fine, too. I installed Ubuntu on my mother's laptop and she's been very happy. Her camera works fine, just plug it in and it works. I've not had any issu

Seriously, their response was to disable spaces in the form? There is no legitimate reason for anything other than \w to be in there... how about a real filter? Twitter has been lazy and generally pathetic in just about every area since th
