That's interesting, because when working with UV light I could feel pain in my eyes, so the body does have some sort of defense mechanism.

The couple of explanations of algorithms that I looked at were good. Much more concise than a textbook, but with links to additional material.

You may be interested in MLton, which is an ML compiler that achieves high levels of optimisation by aggressively specialising your code: generic functions get specialised to the type and higher order functions get inlined to eliminate clos

I don't doubt that your conclusion is correct, but what if the sort is used in 10 other functions, each of which is used 10 times? If you inlined everything you would end up with 100 copies of bubble sort. The code blowup is exponentia

An alternative is to make a .xlsx file with Excel, then unzip it. You'll get a folder with text files and then you'll see how to generate your own.

That depends entirely on the regex implementation. If the implementation uses a DFA to match multiple regexes simultaneously then the performance will be as good as a trie because a DFA is more or less a trie.

Didn't Chrome already used to have that feature where you could install an application and it would put an icon on your desktop and open it in a browser window without tab/url bar?

This article makes a good point, but what's the alternative? There is no good cross-platform GUI solution. Qt, GTK, JavaFx, wxWidgets, none of them are very good. Electron at least has the advantage of being fully cross-platform and no

Capitalism has been and will be an essential ingredient to solve the problem and switch to other sources of energy. The issue is that the costs to the global environment are not borne by the polluters. Put a price tag on pollution and the m

It is interesting that you cite the UK as an example, because the US seems to be doing much better than the UK in this regard. Polls show that 100% of UK Muslims find homosexuality an unacceptable lifestyle choice, and more than half want h

I don't understand the outrage specifically over torture. Yes, it's terrible, but why is there more outrage over waterboarding than over drone strikes? This makes no sense to me. Would you rather be waterboarded or drone striked?

It didn't surprise me. You have to look through the reality distortion field of the media and established politicians, because that only represents the views of a tiny and intellectually very non-diverse group of people. Consider the m

I've seen this said many times, but I've never understood why people think this argument makes sense. If anything it's the opposite: the larger the country the larger the economies of scale. If there are diseconomies of scale

It is the same in the Netherlands. By the time people are old enough to get a drivers license they already knows this. Everyone gets taught this by their parents, and everyone cycles themselves so people know that this is necessary.

Sharding is fundamentally a performance optimisation. If you can instead use a faster database and not have to shard or at least not as much, that saves you a lot of hassle. By having a smaller system you can in practice also reduce your fa
