The main problem is that there are no good abstractions in popular programming languages to take advantage of SIMD extensions. Also, the feature set being all over the place (e.g. integer support is fairly recent) doesn't help either.

The sum/product dichotomy is very confusing. Sums and products are operations in muggle math (functions), but in the example a product is a data type? It feels off. It's not intuitive at all and so far removed from normal programm

In this case, they're basically using a neural network to approximate a really tricky high dimensional function from a lot of measurements from a scene, and use it to interpolate values. Think of it as "fancy (non)linear regressio

Well, salaries are about 15% of the federal budget, you don't necessarily need to cut jobs to reduce spending. You may even increase it and still reduce spending since it's such a small part of the spending.

The M1 was a complete surprise, it was so far ahead that it was ridiculous. The M2-4 are still ahead (in their niche), but since the M1, Intel and AMD have been playing catchup.

If you're comfy with a bit of code and there's a nagging thing you wish you could change on your Mac, Hammerspoon ( https://www.hammerspoon.org/ ) is a great tool. For example, I use it to add a shortcut that comple

This is anecdotic, but personally I'm seeing much more recruiter activity on my inbox. Specially targeted recruiters for startups. The trend has been going up for the last few months. It's looking like the startup scene is about t

Why water? It's not lost, it's endlessly renewable, specially since it's mostly just evaporated. Energy or carbon released is much more interesting. Do they mean evaporated? That's 2.45 kJ per gram starting at 20C or 1.2

It's rather complex, there's a whole team handling it, we have servers in ~20 data centers distributed globally, large pools have > 20k pods running on each, each dc has 100TB to 1PB of RAM available. We have pod affinity rules

In science the money is not tied to the utility of the research (or at least no directly tied in most cases). It's possible to get funding to research something completely bonkers, in engineering it's less likely.

I like that quote. For me, engineering is applied science for money . That's the main thing. Someone is paying for everything you do. We get into it because we care about the how more than the why, but we end up having to deal with th

The only issue with rebasing is if someone else has checked out the branch and now they have diverged. It's usually a simple fix, but it can get annoying. I tend to checkout branches to do code reviews, when changes are complex a diff

Shippable MVPs were never about trading quality for time to market. That's a misunderstanding, borne from people taking the idea too literally. You could: - trade tech debt (future changes are harder) for time to market - features for
