For that matter, why can I get 200GB/mo at 50mbit/s plus a server for $20 from a VPS provider, and $.15/GB beyond that ($.10 if purchased in advance in the case of Linode)? Why do consumer ISPs need to charge so much more? The ISP has to

Strange but not unexpected. Google Music doesn't work with my phone however it does attempt to replace the stock Music app by adding a second app called the exact same thing and anytime I try to play a music file it tries to load the Google

If your DHCP server is handing out leased addresses to other clients you might have bigger problems to worry about. For example if you expect a lot of churn on the network you should be using much shorter leases times.

Each one of these high profile hacks makes me think we're inching closer to a non-free Internet everyday. How much longer will big business tolerate this before they start calling in favors from their pets in congress? It's going to start w

There were a couple of issues with NVIDIA graphics drivers in DP4 which could cause kernel panics, UI glitches, etc. Fixed in the latest DP4 update. The folks over at netkas.org forums do a lot of exploring in those kexts. It seems like Lio

Apple can afford to take a risk with FCP because it's absolutely nonessential to their business. If they're wrong then so what? FCPX becomes iMovie 2014 instead. Not even a blip on Apple's financial radar. I do think it's a growing market b

It was. This new device could very possibly be free with 2 year contract if it only costs $300-$350. The unlocked angle is mostly for the international markets where more carrier competition exists and there's a real incentive to go contrac

As many people have said the challenge is everyone's 10 apps are a bit different and that's why you need a big software catalog. This is especially true of games. You can only play Angry Birds so many times. There are hundreds of other re

I found it a bit creepy simply because I view the Google services as pure utility completely segregated from my real life. I use them in the same way I use my microwave or toaster. If I woke up this morning and my microwave said "call Dad"

I'm not suggesting Facebook is unchallengeable just that it will take much longer due to the enormous number of users. The exodus from MySpace took several years with about 1/4th less users. So a 10 year timeframe seems completely reasonabl

I think it's settled for the next decade or so at least. With 687 million users if each user spent 15 minutes switching to an alternative it would take a combined time investment of about 20,000 years for Facebook to disappear. Of course

I've been using MobileMe since it launched and, besides the initial problems, it's actually a really good service. It's the $99 price tag that doomed it to be a niche service. With iCloud being free, even if it's only as functionality as MM

Is there actually any evidence to suggest Apple's 34-pin dock cables fail more often than others? I've owned 34-pin dock devices going back about 8 years now and I cannot recall ever having a broken dock cable. I have no doubt it does happe

As a non-console gamer is really amazes me how complex it has gotten. There's gotta be at least 4 different controllers that will work on the WiiU? How do you decide which one to use? Are some games unplayable without the right controller?

On the surface $25/year seems too low to cover a music subscription service but there are about 140 million iOS devices out there and probably 50 million Macs? If 50% of them were to signup for iCloud and pay $25/year with 70% going to the

The analogy I've been using is air travel. Everyone knows the risks but we continue to fly anyway because planes just don't crash that often. Driving down the highway, which feels safer, is statistically far more dangerous.

Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes in the mandatory evacuation area. Displacement is really a horrible thing. It destroys communities and they never fully recover afterwards because people can't or won't return.
