For sure. There's ups and downs to both worlds. I get bored easily, so the ability to jump from project to project while having the same job is something I really like. As many bad agencies there are out there, there's some good o

That sucks. I jumped from the world of tech into starting my own agency. There seems to be a lot of crappy agencies and firms out there that use questionable tactics to get the job done faster and for cheaper rather than correctly. I think

I'm going to disagree. My agency helped take one of our clients to #1 grossing in education off the back of mostly facebook and twitter mobile install ads. We had an average of $0.60 to $0.80 downloads with an over 10% conversion to ou

I have seen that. That mostly has to do with boost posts though. We only use custom tailored audiences for our ads and it works quite well. Albeit there's a lot of data scrubbing.

I'm in advertising too. What I'm really hoping comes out of this is greater transparency in inventory. Give me greater control over my blacklist and I'll be a lot happier.

It most certainly isn't. I think there's a bias on HackerNews to default to hating on ads, but they can be very powerful. I'm certainly biased because I do it for a living, and the evidence I can offer is certainly anecdotal

Piling on here. Marc Ecko's book Unlabel does a good job touching on this. There's gatekeepers and goalkeepers. YC is very valuable to be sure, but the real goalkeeper is getting your customers to pay for your product or service.

Facebook has 7,185 employees as of June 30th, 2014. Assuming the average salary is $100,000 (They aren't all developers). It means that facebook makes enough money to pay all it's employees for the year in 22 and a half days.

>ads and PR spending These are growth activities as opposed to the others you list. The truth is many products never have just organic "viral" growth. They need ads, sales, or both to drive it.

Imho a good ad, and more broadly a good brand, both has a cultural imprint piece and a "emotional inception" piece. Think of Chick Fil A. They've taken a strong stand on same sex marriage. They've made a cultural imprint

My master services agreement actually contains my NDA. Not sure if that's standard practice, but I think it works well as it cuts down on paperwork and it precludes me from having to have a separate conversation about it.

This is essentially the approach Dwolla has taken versus other payment gateways. The issue is does Square want to be in the business of being a credit card company or a POS provider?

Advertiser here. This is correct. Social + context is going to be king moving forward. Advertising is going nowhere, it's just taking the form of content as opposed to banner ads.
