You can absolutely afford it on two tech salaries. I was exactly the person your describing 15+ years ago, but my wife wasn’t working so we only had one tech salary. Fast forward all that time, and the housing market you complain about will

One thing to keep in mind about CA, once you buy that $800k house, your real estate taxes are more or less locked at that price and won’t rise as the value increases. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_California_Propos

That’s not what I mean. When I see coworkers eating red meat on a regular basis, I believe they are committing a grave moral injustice. I do not believe that the work place is the right place to push them on that issue.

I think eating a lot of red meat is one of the greatest moral problems in our society today from climate change, factory farming, and habitat destruction. I don’t think I should be haranguing people at work about it.

I’m a developer that often does web work. I need to test on multiple browsers, which is literally impossible on the iPad for no good reason.

That's fair, arbitrary wasn't the right word. They were chosen for the use case of a smart phone, not a general purpose computer. People pretending that they are reasonable for a general purpose computer are missing the boat IMO.

I hear this argument a lot, but I don't buy it. Let's flip it around, 99% of people will want to do something with their computer that will turn out to be a giant pain in the ass with an ipad compared to a mac or windows laptop. I

ipad's limitations are arbitrary and have no strong reason to exist. I've been an apple fan for years, and bought my first PC in nearly 20 years recently because I shouldn't have to buy two very expensive apple devices (a mac

My family is made up of poor immigrants, many of whom are back in their home country. Free communication systems are a godsend for them. While I love libraries and public broadcasting, I learned to code as a poor kid through library books,

You have a very low opinion of humans. I happen to think people are a bit better equipped to make their own decisions than you do.

Has anyone done, or seen, any analysis on energy used for ML training rather than clock time? I’ve done some of my own for comp heavy workloads, but it wasn’t ML on a GPU.

I’ve been thinking about this, and I never thought of it before. I would love a language that is both dynamic and static similar to JS and TS. but, when the types are provided, use them to compile to fast code, while keeping the ability to

There are a lot of things python could do to be much better. Two examples, 1) dependency management in python is a train wreck compared to most modern languages. 2) the way package paths are done for imports is far more confusing than it sh
