Yes, this. Thank you for explaining it better than I did. I loved this with a real production python 2 app, and my take-away, be very careful building against proprietary systems like classic app engine and all of its services.

I led a team that wrote an app app engine using python 2. When Google upgraded to python 3 they completely rewrote entire libraries, like the one for datastore, so we were forced to either rewrite most of our app or to stay on a deprecated

Google has absolutely abandoned things in their cloud. App Engine has been a moving target for years for just one example.

Ractors don't share everything, unlike threads. Most objects are Unshareable objects, so you don't need to care about thread-safety problem which is caused by sharing.

Did you even read about the implementation details here? It appears you didn’t.

Right, and we quickly get into the grey area. If the US military has strong evidence that someone overseas is planning terrorist attacks on the US, or US forces, can they attack him first, or is a trial required? This quickly gets very nuan

Not in combat. We can debate what “in combat” means, but that is a different issue. If an American picks up a gun, in a war zone, and starts attacking American forces, they can be killed. Full Stop

That’s never been the standard for people fighting against America during a war.

Thanks. I’ve been doing something similar, I’m using Go to run multi process python systems.

Ractor looks really nice. Does python have anything similar to it?

Yes, but I was replying to someone who said that we got all of this with cgi-bin. That’s like saying, “I can code a modern app in assembly, therefore there’s been no progress here”.

That was a much worse solution, and even worse with cgi-bin.

Yup, this is much better than that, and nicely integrated for you.

I know, I wrote many of those, it’s a much worse solution than this.

Thanks, I need to read up more on it. When I look at the rails code, I see a lot of nice convenience capabilities in the template definitions and rendering.

Yes, I’m curious how hard it is to get this working with a different backend stack. I’d love to have this in Go.

If you type a chat message in your browser, how does it automatically show up in my browser with XMLHttpRequest?

cgi-bin didn’t give you the ability to update a chat page across several different windows in near real-time.

Dev dependencies: a library you need during development, but that isn’t needed in production. I think your -test and -dev are this, but it’s not clear how you are maintaining all of these, and building for prod. This is the main complaint,

Yes, this works as you expect. What it lacks are three big things; making it easy to see what your direct dependencies are, separating dev dependencies from prod dependencies, and an easy way to update a dependency while resolving all trans

What does that command do? Does it install dependencies, or simply verify the versions of the installed dependencies?

How do you validate versions against the constraint file? I read your original link a few times and didn’t see it.

First, how did you generate that requirements file? Second, how do you separate dev dependencies from prod dependencies, and how do you update a dependency and ensure all of its transitive dependencies are resolved appropriately?

I’m curious how they ensure every developer is using the same versions of things, as well as how they manage dev dependencies and transitive dependencies. pip + venv + requirements.txt doesn’t solve this out of the box while most languages

“I could totally make a site generator in a couple hours except for the features that are providing me a lot of value” is a really dumb take.
