Precisely. The author uses the term "slavery" while completely ignoring the fact that the users are choosing to contribute their time and energy. Clearly they believe it is worth it.

Lifted from one of my old blog posts: - Pros and Cons: when I have too many answers, I try to make it objective by drawing up the pros and cons and seeing where that takes me. - Simplify: like a lot of developers, I can be prone to over-ana

I'm in Australia too, although I don't accept recurring payments myself. However, I do make a recurring payment to a New Zealand based company. And by logging into the PayPal Australia website I see an Australian freecall (i.e. 1800) numb

The silent majority are using PayPal without problems. They support recurring payments like this, and eliminate the need for you to directly handle credit card details at all. Just don't leave piles of money sitting in your PayPal account.

If (like me) you normally skip video links, give this one a go. It's brief and all visual, so a video really makes sense in this case. And, practical or otherwise, it's creative and thought provoking!

If we are going to move forward into the era of the Real-Time web, we need to be setting examples of how different companies/sites can work together with event-based messaging/notifications. I wouldn't call the current hook into HN a good

Thanks for linking to the post with the methodology, it was interesting. It does show the difficulty of trying to get accurate numbers, although the author has clearly made an effort to. Re: the effect of inequality: sure, that's the effec

Comparing average incomes is meaningless for at least two reasons: 1) The cost of living will not be the same; and 2) Income is no measure of quality of life/satisfaction. As an example, what if average incomes are higher, but so is income

To be honest your point seems completely vacuous (far more ridiculous than the point you are responding to). It appears to reduce to "Danes are magical - I think". What makes Danes special? Is this not related to the sort of government t

You mean start their own VM implementation? The cost of that would be huge (see, e.g. Parrot). The Scala developers are better off concentrating on making Scala better, IMO.

To me it sounds like the success of NitWiki was down to the culture of the 30-person team. I'm guessing this stemmed from some leaders in that group, and applied to more than just the wiki. I'm not sure that much has changed over time - i

I think the biggest difference is that Google has aligned its interests more in line with users (as their best long-term strategy). Facebook seems willing to exploit users any way they can. It's wise to be cautious sharing your data with a

I indent my Perl code. Not everyone does, however. It's a trivial task to reformat it in an editor. But in Python, you don't even have to worry about other people not indenting their code! I guess the only complaint I might have is why b
