I think if you take the babies of the smartest X% people in the world and raise them in poverty then yes, their average IQ will be lower than if they were raised in a middle class household. Poverty means you have to skip meals, you can

I was kind of wondering if it was 'y', 'js' or 'p'. The 'p' of the older logo was more readable in my opinion. Overall, I like the new logo more.

I think Julia ( http://julialang.org/ ) might be a better alternative to Scientific Python than Go. I'm not sure you can get the same flexibility/expressiveness you get in Numpy/R/Matlab in Go.

To be fair, they should both have taken your advice. Felipe made is point in hist first post, refuting the arguments that needed to be. The following posts (by both Olav and Felipe) are just noise. The whole thread turns into a silly "I wan

We already have the laws to handle that kind of witch hunt behavior (it's basically defamation), it's just that we need to have them enforced. Sadly, a lot of people seem to think that their responsibility for what they do stop once they're

I spent many of my student holidays hacking on stuff. That was really great and I learned many technologies/languages that we never touched at university. But I also did two internships, one at a big, one at a small company. They were incre

This is pretty cool ! I worked on a similar problem during my bachelor thesis[1] : I wrote an algorithm to remove clouds from NDVI images (used for deforestation detection[2]). We used fourrier, moving windows and some ugly hacks to detect

This is insanely cool ! Is it also possible to call Julia from Python ? This would allow me to switch to Julia instead of C for the heavy algorithms.

This is pretty cool and I like the concept. The problem I see is that by requiring a working internet connection on your smartphone and the computer you use to present, this add a number of points of failure. I'd feel safer with just a USB

Is this even legal ? In Switzerland, I don't think an employer can claim ownership of a piece of work that was produced on the employee spare time (and on his own computer and so on).

Regarding the black box criticism, it seems to me that most popular algorithms (SVM, Random forest, ...) become black boxes once you go past the simple 2D example and apply them to real problems. Real-world decisions trees are pretty unread

FlatUI was inspired by another website. In this case, both websites seem to have copied all the assets up to the javascript from gocardless since they received sentry notifications.

Apple's clock was an exact copy of the swiss railway clock. In this case, the rounded corners are different, the color is different, the shadow is different, the lengths of the lines are different.

This immediatly reminded of about Ballmer's reaction to the first iPhone [1] : he started laughing explaining it's too expensive, doesn't have a physical keyboard. [1] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eywi0h_Y5_U

I had the same initial reaction, but the killer is the hard drive : 32 or 64 GB SSD... That's a bit short to do local development. Maybe you can change it though.

Python has some nice tools to interface with R when needed (rpy2 for example). On top of that, scipy/numpy/matplotlib provides a lot of scientific routines.
