Unions can't force their members (or non-members) to strike, except for the fact that if as a member you refuse to join a strike organised by your union you might be expelled. Attempting an individual strike without the backing of a un

> Few people working at Tesla Sweden have joined the strike Tesla claims that 90% of their employees in Sweden have refused to strike, but that figure seemingly includes office workers and others who would never have been part of the met

I'm not familiar with Norwegian labour law, but if it's anything like the Swedish equivalent there are narrowly defined rules about when you can and can't engage in solidarity action. It's only permissible in response to

I'm not so sure. There was a news article today about a leaky storage site for nuclear waste, coincidentally not too far from Manchester. [0] There are more ways than explosions to cause ecological devastation. [0] https://w

I’m struggling to understand this argument. The size of memory that you can address on any particular hardware is fixed, just like the word size for additions. Restricting yourself to a smaller part of that address space in software won’t c

Did you follow the link in the footnote? [0] I thought it made the case for doing extra quite convincingly. The gist of the argument is that it's worth spending some small proportion of your work time on exploratory work that might or

Insurance won't get you out of jail or pay your fine for you. But your point is valid for civil damages, like getting sued by the family of the pedestrian you just killed with your truck. I wonder how much of an effect those hypothetic

I agree that is outrageous. But I'd imagine most people don't consider the survivability of pedestrians in a collision when they buy a car, since people generally overestimate their driving ability and underestimate their likeliho

Ah yes, the famously extremist BBC and their vegan agenda. Even ignoring the environmental issues, high consumption of red meat has been linked to a number of adverse health outcomes. Processed meats even more so. [0] But I imagine you

Good point. But there are questions around the long-term safety of seaweed additives. And how many farmers would pay for seaweed while methane is free to emit?

Beef production (as well as meat produced from sheep and goats) is one of the most environmentally costly ways of producing food, because of methane emissions [0]. I don't imagine substituting bugs for grass would make much of a differ

Unions generally lean left politically for the same reason business organisations tend to lean right. It would be strange for them to advocate for worse policies for their members.

Not OP, but in my experience they will look for a Schengen entry stamp during the exit control. Showing e.g. a Swedish passport for border entry and exit, and a US passport for check-in works fine.

Yes maybe. But these deathbed regrets can also be shared by hospice staff [1] and volunteers and the like, some of whom arguably are more likely to spend time with patients who don't have family there. [1] https://www.thegua

I don't disagree that many people find personal satisfaction in their work, beyond seeing it just as a source of money. I do too. Your point about time being zero-sum is a poignant one. Everyone wishes they had more hours in the day to

Great read. As with everything, balance is key. But I’ve never heard of anyone on their deathbed wishing they’d spent less time with family and friends, and more time grinding away at work.

If the cost of owning and operating a car included paying for externalities like CO2 emissions it would already be unaffordable to the middle class. Internalizing those costs is only fair.

There's pretty strong evidence that policies like subsidised child care in high-income countries lead to higher fertility rates. https://www.economist.com/europe/2023/02/16/why-there-are-so...
