I choose my words carefully. Please read them carefully. 1. My argument was never about the quality of open-access journals. Given the choice between a closed journal and a "lesser" open-access journal, most (but not all) authors

The added value of publishers is more than just the editing. Why do you think a published paper is "worth" more than a pdf on a random website? - Almost nobody in academia is willing to publish in substandard journals only because

Sure. The modern TeXs (xetex, luatex) take unicode input. Also for math. That makes the text even nicer looking. But most editors are inconvenient for finding the right characters.

No puzzle here. You can only log in if Google has flagged your search topics. On google search, you have the variable window.location.search = "?gfe_rd=cr&ei=XXXGyZiVNHoFcuF8Qe7wYHACw&gws_rd=ssl" That string is appended to

True. Valgrind slows things considerably. In the end, what to use is a matter of workflow and convenience. Good to know how tcmalloc makes debugging memleaks easier. Just for for completeness, a third option would be a tracing tool that hoo

Besides emacs 24.4 being an awesome release by itself, it also means esr can finally transition the development to git. That will render the project a lot more accessible for new developers and ad-hoc bugfixing.

The term 'real-time' is used _very_ loosely here. In industrial settings, in order to claim realtime-properties, you need to make guarantees about the runtime behavior of server, client and the network infrastructure in between. I

At one point they had nearly 30 repositioning trucks in London (2-3 years ago). At Waterloo Station they basically hand them off trucks directly to the arriving customers during rush hour.

I recently published on the same topic. [1] In many bike sharing systems (such as in London), there is a daily repeating cycle, where too many people want to get to the city center in the morning and back out in the early evening. You know
