I'm a Tesla fan and I actually expect this from a new car company with their first product from the ground up. They need to figure this out if they want the Model 3 to be mass market though. I want to buy it and it doesn't even ex

Me either. I was a big fan of logmein when they had a free version but it wasn't something I was willing to pay for. LastPass is though.

If you have a 401k you could potentially borrow against it if absolutely necessary. My plan allows 4% loans in which I pay myself the interest and a very small fee goes to the plan holder. I'm assuming the 6 months of living expenses i

I don't know much about the doctorate process but do these people get scholarships/sponsorships? Most of the time those appear to be favored towards foreign students.

I work with some very capable foreigners. Some of them have been here for almost 10 years and still haven't gotten through the citizenship process. There is something wrong with that.

This is what I was wondering. I assume they mean liquid savings. I rarely have any liquid savings but I have 40k in various retirement funds.

Most of the sub reddits I hangout in don't have those tones or maybe I'm used to ignoring those types of comments online. I think any community starts to have those problems as they grow. HN isn't immune but it's still a

If you make it easier for people to find the sub reddits then you get those people who are making the comments in the sub reddits now. It's a catch 22.

Yeah but it's accurate about basically any community. It's not like reddit is overtly *ist compared, to say, youtube. Plus when you get out of the default subreddits that attract everyone there is a pretty good community.

We don't have too. We could just say "you must have a medallion to operate a cab". They secondary market drove up the prices so I guess it doesn't make sense to have the gov reimburse them. If there was no secondary mark

It seems like they should have either used the medallion or returned it to the government. How do we fix it now though? Does the government get rid of medallions? Does someone refund the people who bought them? It's pretty clear people

What makes you think we haven't gone down that path already? This industry is really no different than any other. Who you know gives you a ton of leverage but I think that's just basic human nature.

I'm taking the snowball approach right now too. Maybe I will eventually get to where I can put away 20% but for now that extra money goes to paying down debt. Aside from $100 a month that goes into an emergency savings fund and 4% into

Just for the record when someone says "not to be x" they are almost always about to be X. I was wrong. You are in a situation similar to me though. About the same income/housing price with a wife and first child on the way. T

It's both. I've worked on fixing the latter. However, living beyond your means isn't always that easy to correct. I can't just stop paying student loans for example. It's not like I'm dropping $300 a month on

TIL I live beyond my means. Welcome to America. Having 10-15% cushion to save is a luxury for a lot of people. Probably not most people on HN but still.
