I do wonder how many of the users currently on Flattr are there because they hope to manage to get enough Flattrs of their own to come out ahead. It would be interesting to run some stats: What percentage of Flattr users have created at lea

I know tor publishes lists of exit nodes, but does it need to publish ips of exit enclaves? It clearly does not publish lists of ips running hidden services, and an exit enclave seems closer to that than an exit node.

Another often overlooked use for IRC is as a side channel during events. In conferences, we'll all be in a room, on IRC commenting on talks. During the BP oil spill, a channel (#theoildrum) had 500+ people, including some with oilfield expe

Wasn't it _why who said that coding for the web is hard to get into because it requires 3 languages? (javascript, css, html; loosest definition of "language"). Plus understanding how they fit together; DOM etc. Plus portability. People di

AFAICS, there is no unsafePerformIO in any of the above except for stringtable-atom. AIUI, it's possible to implement generalized memoization in haskell w/o unsafePerformIO, and both memocombinators and MemTrie do so. I take your point that

Having trouble to reconcile your comments about no talking allowed with my own experience growing up on a farm. Listening to the grownups constantly talking and bantering is really a key part of my own memories. I wonder if this is more bec

The security hole was introduced by a Ubuntu-specfic patch to pam. The pam_motd-legal-notice patch was added in July 2009 due to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pam/+bug/399071

Somehow I got it in my head that jwz implemented it. And I'm not the only one. But I can't find actual proof of the evil deed, and jwz in fact denies it -- although he does take credit for adding "MilSpec blinking". It seems that at worst j

People have been focusing on the noscript tag, but I rather like the idea of something in the head that disables all javascript in body. One good idea is perhaps better than one good idea followed by one bad idea, especially when the histor

One thing I find interesting about youtube's response is they are reportedly going in and removing <script> tags from already posted comments. So.. do this mean they sanitize comments at post time, rather than at display time?

In your example above, $1 may contain javascript. The easy way is href="data:text/javascript", or even href="javascript:alert('foo')"", but there are probably a dozen other ways, including data:image/svg. There's no real way to "es

Also, my understanding is that polls on Kos included more data than is typically provided. Which I think helped this analysis. So a more traditional poll could be faked just as badly and not be susceptable to being caught.
