It doesn't quite map to any known mental model, though, because when someone replies to your post, it's broadcast to your friends instead of their friends. I think this is potentially extremely confusing and weird. I think "Places" are

After having played with Google+ for a few hours, I find that the Circles feature is deceptively complicated, and can lead to unintended information leakage. I've described it further here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2714333

Well, that's encouraging, but I think part of the problem is that I didn't know that. And I think part of why I didn't know that is because "Circles" isn't actually a metaphor that helps me understand how it works. Places, OTOH, is, and I t

Not sure what you'd consider evidence, but the Wired article by Steven Levy (the guy who wrote In the Plex) contains this quote: No one expects an instant success. But even if this week’s launch evokes snark or yawns, Google will keep at i

That's basically how Google Reader does it, too. The problem is, as you said, if I comment on something someone shared, I have no idea who can see that comment. I was definitely a bit weirded out the first time someone I'd never met replied

Yes, that is another great illustration of how complex and unclear this system of individual lists is. Now imagine the same scenario under the Places metaphor. You go to the "Work Friends" place and share an item. Jill, who is also in that

Right, but that still leaves me not having any idea who can see my comments. Which is fine in Google Reader because I don't expect any level of privacy there, but in Google+, esp. after having explicitly set up Circles, I might expect some

That's one of the first things I noticed, too. I imagine something this full-featured will be hard to open-source/make open protocols for/federate like they tried with Wave and Buzz, but I hope they aren't abandoning those ideas after the d

That doesn't seem like an accurate analogy to me. Google was being investigated for what were basically accidental breeches of privacy, not for anything that was actively malicious.

The problem I see with user-defined groups implementation is conversations. If I share an item with my "work friends" group, and someone replies to it, who can see the reply? Is it only my work friends, or can the replier choose others to e

Doesn't that mean they're going to be more trustworthy than anyone else? They've got direct supervision from the federal government.

It's more natural with an email client, though, because email is already federated, so interoperable with the existing email system. This doesn't appear to be.

Yeah, the 3 to 1 ration he cites is, when I think about, surprisingly low, considering where the money comes from, and how easy being a PR flack is compared to being a serious journalist who breaks actual news.

Seems like a simple matter of signal to noise ratio to me. That single comment by itself does no real harm, but if it's not discouraged, the practice will proliferate. The situations you cite do not include the potential for noise overwhelm

I think you're misunderstanding the author's intention. He's not trying to describe how the terms are used, he's trying to classify what he sees as more or less distinct disciplines of the field. He's also not trying to classify types of jo

This is Gruber at his best. He correctly points out that the distinction people (including me) seem to be drawing is basically an arbitrary one. I think the more abstract distinction comes from what each company wants you to do with their p

Whenever there are Facebook stories, some people talk about how well designed it is. I'm not a user, but whenever I've tried to use my wife's account I've experienced it as a horribly confusing clutterfest. People talk about the clean UI de
