Yes, one of the things Larry Page talked about in the earnings call yesterday was aggressive project pruning and focus. I agree that this is a good sign of Page's leadership.

I agree that the problem doesn't seem to be quality so much as mindshare. Seems like the same thing that happened with the Zune. The product was compelling enough, but was ultimately too little, too late. Many Android phone interfaces look

It does seem pretty grumpy. It reminds me of how different people's mindsets can be regarding software updates. My wife, for example, reacts: "Oh no, an update." She hates updates and waits as long as possible to do them. I guess because up

After reading Steve Yegge's "platforms" rant, I'm starting to see examples of it everywhere in Google products. This seems like a prime example.

Your comment is amusing, but there's merit to diversifying your cloud storage. I.e. if I lose access to gmail, I still have my dropbox stuff. Storing offline is another way to diversify, but it's subject to a lot of other vulnerabilities.

I would be surprised if it wasn't the carriers that started that particular obfuscation.

Doesn't stop them from making sure you know that the 4S is just as fast all these "4G" phones (stopping short of comparing to real 4G phones, of course). https://plus.google.com/109995794392976695103/posts/PdBbSct8...

How about this: "Speaking ill of the newly dead increases suffering unnecessarily."? But I think the larger point that both you and the gp are missing is that, sure, sometimes it's effective to violate social norms. Steve Jobs was famously

As an instinctual contrarian, I had something of an allergic reaction to the hagiography, esp. by people who had very little actually to do with Jobs. Many times during the last two days I had the impulse to try to counter what I saw as kne

Yeah, there are quite a few options that seem like they should be native, but I had to hack the device to get. Custom screen savers is one. Another is force left-justify on everything.

I think the problem is that, no matter how small the payment, it's some nonzero amount of friction for growth. Not only are you putting a paywall up between nonusers and content, you're asking me as a user to put my stuff behind your paywal

You're off-topic and disrespectful. There's a time and place to talk about Apple's legal practices. But this thread is about Samsung and Google (potentially) behaving much more respectfully toward a competitor than you are. Which is commend

Strategy doesn't preclude tact. I.e. press hits doesn't have to be only reason not to launch a product on the day of the funeral. [Edit: Being tactful can also be strategic, because it will be seen as, well, tactful. The problem, as you dem

Yeah, it's a weird issue. It sort of depends on the context, but I think I would feel silly/awkward either way, but for different reasons. If I'm at home, I feel less silly giving commands like "WEATHER. TOMORROW." I guess because I don't w

Ah, I see where our disagreement is. I agree with you that the current low-end of Android is what you describe, and reading one node higher in the thread, I understand what you're arguing, that the iPhone 3GS is now competing directly with

$250 (handset) + $35/mo * 12 mo = $775. Approximately half the cost of ownership. I think this thread is about the cost of ownership of a "free with contact" iPhone 3GS vs. alternatives, targeted at the low end. I think that's a significant

Yes, exactly right, especially considering the broad range that 'private' sharing can take on G+. I.e., I use a circle called "Following" to use G+ more like twitter, which includes a lot of people. So when I share with all my circles, it's

Maybe I shouldn't speak for kenjackson, but I don't think 3D was actually the feature he was hoping for, just an example of the kind of industry-changing innovation of which Apple is capable but was completely absent today. And I say this n

I don't think it works that way with tech products, because an outdated smartphone is considerably less functional than a cutting-edge one. I.e. there's a functional aspect to the desire that goes beyond fashion, or maybe fuses the two. Or

That's a fair point. But I wasn't making a value judgment. I think it's a perfectly legitimate way to drive desire/demand. I also think that long model design life cycles are carefully calculated to create desire as well as create a great p

As an Android user and admitted Google fanboy, there's a secret part of me that always hopes the new iPhone will be so much and so unequivocably better that I'll want to switch. I really like the iPhone 4/4s ID, but I am a bit disappointed

It's a matter of signaling/conspicuous consumption. People with brand new iPhones have no way of distinguishing themselves from people with the old model. It's also another way that Apple drives upgrades in the high end: by making the old m

And you're still restricting yourself to the US market. Globally, your second sentence is a lot more representative, I think, because handsets aren't bundled with contracts. So the real prices of the handsets are reflected more accurately.
