I think I’ve chosen language that doesn’t communicate well. It makes sense to me in my head, but the HN crowd doesn’t seem to follow what I mean. :-) Fundamentals: the social model essentially places the onus of accommodating disability on

I’m disabled. I have mixed feelings about the things in this list. E.g. part of my disability experience involves my mental health and, when you’re talking about me, anyway, I don’t mind the term “mentally ill”. On the other hand, it sort

I’m also a hobbyist and I think it’s just slow and incremental. This year I decided to expand my electronics hobby into synth stuff. I was by no means prepared for this, but after a year of studying various synth module circuits I’m starti

As someone who deals with the misery of an “invisible” chronic illness, one of my great fears is that everyone (or the majority, anyway) thinks like GP.

ADHD meds enable focus, but I find that I still struggle with picking the right tasks to focus on. I think picking the right tasks is a weaker skill for me, probably because I didn’t start to develop that skill until I was well into adulth

I know this wasn’t your point, but I’m a 3D printing enthusiast and I follow what’s going on in the industry. I wouldn’t consider 3D printing played out, but I would say that it’s become more boring in the last few years. This is a good th

I suspect you’re being facetious, but there are several 39mm screwmount lenses from the former Soviet Union that can be had for less than $100 (often much less) and offer excellent rendition for the price. It’s how I can afford to shoot a

This is what I do. I primarily use Linux because it has the most flexibility with typeface and scaling, but it’s still not perfect (e.g. all electron apps) and it’s definitely bespoke and hard to reproduce. I routinely open tickets with so

Part of why af Klint is interesting is that some of her abstract work apparently preceded Kandinsky’s. They were at least working in parallel for a time.

Thank you! That seems like a pretty rational starting point. I’m enjoying what I’ve learned so far but the ecosystem is large and has its own technical language. It’s often difficult to dig up simple answers like this.

I’m slowly working my way through the FastAI deep learning course right now. In that course, everything is a nail and deep learning is a hammer — which makes sense, because it’s a course about deep learning. As a total noob, I’m curious: h

While this is a completely fair counterpoint, the part that GP didn’t mention is that a patient’s subjective experience is usually ignored or minimized in psychological research, which prefers to focus on behavior and biological phenomena (

Can you elaborate on this, please? I’ve never heard this hypothesis and I don’t totally understand what it means. Are you saying that SSRIs trigger changes in the brain? What changes? Why do they trigger these changes? Genuinely curious.

I have migraines triggered by changes in the weather. The last two winters have been the most miserable of my life. This most recent winter I had a migraine that lasted an unbelievable 63 days starting the day after Christmas.
